One in three US women and one in two US men will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. That’s why we Relay. The Relay for Life event is a community carnival, of sorts, with games, activities, bake sales, and other fun events designed for all members of the community. During this event, organizing team members walk around a track to signify that cancer never sleeps…but neither do we in the fight to find a cure. The Baldwin-Brentwood-Whitehall Relay will be held at Baldwin High School on Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. All community members are welcome and encouraged to attend!
John F. Slater Funeral Home’s Relay For Life team, Community Spirit, was formed six years ago when the American Cancer Society announced they would be starting a Relay For Life event at Baldwin High School. Since 2011, Community Spirit has invited families and local businesses to join our team in the fight against cancer.
Our team’s annual fundraiser, “A Great Party for a Great Cause” was held on April 13 at The Crack’d Egg on Brownsville Road. Our fundraiser would not have been possible without our generous sponsors, The Crack’d Egg, Rowdy Barbecue, 51 Wings, HCR ManorCare, Passport to Pittsburgh, and Atria’s Senior Living. The music group, The Telephone Line donated their time and talent to the evening.
Although Relay For Life teams compete against each other to raise money for the American Cancer Society during the year, the signature event is the actual day of the Relay. The goal of Relay For Life is to bring communities together, to remember loved ones lost, honor survivors of all cancers, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society make a global impact on the fight against cancer. Most Relay events are 18 hours; the event is used to symbolize the never ending fight against cancer. Some events are shorter which allows the community to participate at more convenient times.
There are many ways to get involved with a Relay For Life, like purchasing a luminary. Each luminary is personalized with the name of the person that you wish to honor. When the sun goes down at the high school on June 10th, the track will be lined with hundreds of luminaries during a luminary ceremony. Each name is read during the touching ceremony.
