Obituary For Alice J. (Almasy) Windstein

Age 89, of Carrick, passed peacefully on May 29, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Born to the late Anna (Hoholak) and Andrew Almasy on April 24, 1936, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Alice traded small-town life for Pittsburgh when she married her beloved husband, the late Raymond H. Windstein.

For decades, Alice was a friendly face in the Carrick community, whether she was assisting shoppers at the Buy Wise in Carrick Shopping Center or helping customers with their lottery luck at the Red Quill. Loving the time spent in the backyard, it was in her garden where Alice truly shone. A masterful gardener, a talent she shared with her late husband Ray, her roses were dazzling. Attracting the attention of all passersby, forcing them to take a moment to stop and smell the roses. Not just a garden feature, her rose trellis was a backdrop for countless prom photos, a testament to Alice's warm spirit and connection to the neighborhood kids.

The greatest joy for Alice was her family. Many cherished memories were created during family vacations at the Outer Banks. With a cup of coffee in hand and her feet in the sand, Alice would share stories and laughter with generations of loved ones.

Alice is survived by her children Raymond H. (Donna) Windstein Jr., Deb Knorr (the late John), and Steve (the late Shelley) Windstein; grandchildren-lovingly referred to as her “Little Stinkers”-Michael Wolak, Anna (Dean) Donnelly, Stephanie (Fiancé Anthony Denillo) Windstein, and Nicholas Windstein; great-grandchildren Isabella, Olivia, Emery, and Lily; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A fond farewell is extended to her Access traveling companions from St. Justin's, who made every Tuesday for her special.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband Raymond H. Windstein; brother Albert J. (Beverly “Bebe”) Almasy; and sisters Martha Chemiento and Anna Marie Luginski.

Alice and her family would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to the staff of UPMC Shadyside Six Main and Family Hospice for their care and kindness.

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 from 2-7 p.m. Funeral Prayer on Wednesday morning at 9:30. Mass of Christian Burial in Blessed Trinity Parish, St. Basil Church at 10:30 a.m. Everyone please meet at the church.

I am so sorry for your loss! I knew Alice when I worked at Buy Wise. She was always nice and pleasant and always had a cup of coffee with her! I moved away from Pittsburgh for a few years. When I came back, I always thought of her often and wondered where she was after Buy Wise closed. Your family will be in my prayers. Susan Beccard Niedermeyer
