December 21, 1919 - June 28, 2018 Kitzinger, Andrew, age 98, on Thursday, June 28, 2018 of Baldwin, recently of Whitehall. Beloved husband of the late Aurelia Kitzinger; loving father of Loretta (the late Sam) DelBianco; devoted grandfather of Linda (Bob) Coholic, Karen DelBianco and Mary Ann Bell; cherished great-grandfather of David, Nick and Chris Bell and Eric and Samantha Garbowsky; brother of Maybelle Matschner, Eileen (Tom) Mari, Carol (Bill) Duttine and the late Chuckie, Elmer (Reds), Ronnie, John (Snookie), Robert, Loraine, and Eldon (Cal) Kitzinger. Andrew, retired from the US Steel Corp, where he worked his way up from a messenger boy to a General Purchasing Agent with offices in Pittsburgh, New York, and Venezuela Brazil. Andrew proudly served as a U.S. Marine during WWII participating in the Battle of Okinawa. Going ashore on April 1, 1945 with the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force and other Allied forces, codenamed Iceberg. The most fierce fighting in the Pacific theater, the battle was referred to as the Typhoon of Steel or tetsu no bÅ?fÅ« in Japanese. Andrew served as a crewman operating a 105 mm howitzer. His small stature earned him cave clearing duties where he is credited with saving the life of a young Japanese girl that was badly injured hiding in a cave. Using translation cards, he convinced her to leave the cave to get medical attention. He carried her to the safety of a Navy corpsmen. Andrew enjoyed being with friends and family, playing cards and watching Pittsburgh sporting events, and an occasional Manhattan. Andrew is loved and remembered for his kindness and willingness to help everyone he came across. He had many personal quotes or sayings that we can always remember him by such as "I'm still kicking, just not scoring any field goals." Andrew is now at peace with his beloved wife of 75 years. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Friday, June 29, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Saturday morning at 9:15.
