Age 68, died unexpectedly at home in Pleasant Hills on Monday, January 31, 2022. Barbara was born June 15, 1953 at Homestead Hospital as the fourth child and only daughter of Martha Sawyer (Nietz) Stoops and Dr. Walton Watson Stoops DDS. She, her parents, and three brothers lived for a year at the Mt. Lebanon home of her grandfather Dr. John A. Nietz PhD while construction continued on a house designed by her mother on a lot in Pleasant Hills. Then in 1954 her family occupied their new home on Colson Drive, where she would reside for much of her life until last Monday. Barbara attended McClellan Elementary School, Pleasant Hills Middle School and Thomas Jefferson High School, where she graduated in 1971. She was enrolled for two years at The College of Wooster, then transferred to Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. She spent a semester abroad in 1975 in Dijon, France. Barbara graduated Otterbein in 1976 with a dual major in French and Spanish. Barbara taught foreign languages at the Catholic high school in Chillicothe, Ohio briefly, then returned to Pittsburgh. She held a variety of clerical and bookkeeping positions, including about 10 years as bookkeeper for a notions shop in Shadyside. After her father’s death in 1994, she moved home to serve as companion and, increasingly, as caregiver for her mother, who died in 2011. Barbara also enrolled in graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh and in 1998 was awarded a MSW degree. This past September, she was pleased to attend the TJ Class of 1971 50th Reunion. Barbara had a sensitive and caring nature. She liked to read and keep informed about current events. She appreciated precision in speech and writing. She loved dogs and nature generally. Stoops, her grandparents Harvey and Eva (Watson) Stoops and Dr. John A. and Ruby (Sawyer) Nietz, her uncle and aunt Chauncey N. and Genevieve (Bistline) Stoops, and her aunt Grace (Stoops) Kaufmann.
