Obituary For Charles Mell Hawkins

January 25, 1922 - October 13, 2014

Hawkins, Charles M., age 92, of Whitehall, on October 13, 2014 at Family Hospice in Mt. Lebanon. Beloved husband of 45 years to Susan Knox Hawkins and 19 years to the late Dorothy McKinley Hawkins; father of Linda (Gary) Graney, Cynthia (David) Brown, Mark Hawkins, and Wendy Fennell; grandfather of Jessica (Mark) Best, Jonathan (Ashley) Graney, Jamison Graney, Tracey Fennell, Will (Lindsay) Fennell and Scott Fennell; great-grandfather of Autumn, Karter and Maggie Best; son of the late Charles Mell Hawkins and Marie Recktenwald Hawkins; brother of Evelyn Courtney Burns and the late Marie (John) Lobert, Gertrude (James) Pendergast and Mildred (Kurt) Hellmann; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Charles graduated from Carrick High School. He enlisted in the Army and served as a Bombardier Navigator on the B17 and B29 during World War II. He then attended the University of Pittsburgh and became a Civil Engineer. He worked for Koppers Corporation for 42 years, Comstock for three and Kaiser for one. He was active as a Mason for over 60 years and a Shriner for more than 50 years. He also taught Sunday School and was a Boy Scout leader. His hobbies included wine making, for which he received numerous awards. After retirement he ran the Koppers Engineering and Construction Company luncheons and did the newsletters for 19 years. Most important to him was his love for his wife and family, he was so proud of all of them. He felt blessed with the life he had led. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Friday from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday in Baldwin Community United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH.
