Obituary For Donald G. Klein

Klein, Donald G.
Age 84, peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, May 26, 2025.

Born and raised on the South Side, Don proudly served in the U.S. Army, including a memorable tour in Korea. A lifelong friend to his siblings Nancy (the late Harry) Reinhart, Dave (Mary) Klein, and Kathy (the late Harry) Brownlee. He met and married the love of his life, the late Joyce (Schoenberger), and together they built a home in Brentwood where they raised their three boys-Don, Rick (Kate), and Michael (Danielle). A proud and present father and grandfather, Don was lovingly known as “Pappy” to Brittney and DJ Klein, Miranda (Nicholas), Tanner (Dana), and Easton (Bridget) Klein and Grace Klein. He brought endless joy and humor to their lives. Don was a youth football coach for St. Sylvester School, baseball coach for the BAA, storyteller and jokester who kept family and friends entertained for hours. He started his own carpet installation business and later retired as a dedicated Port Authority bus driver. Don was also known for hosting legendary Fourth of July parties at “Pap’s Pool". He lived a life full of fun, connection and was always quick to lend a hand-often alongside his partner in crime, Tom Panasko. Don leaves behind countless nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends who will carry his love and stories in their hearts forever. He will also be missed by Kathie Moffat-Klein and family.

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, on Thursday, May 29, 2025 from 2-8 p.m. Funeral Prayer on Friday morning at 9:30. Mass of Christian Burial in Blessed Trinity Parish, St. Sylvester Church at 10:30 a.m. Interment with military honors will be held at Jefferson Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to the American Legion Post #935, 280 Joseph Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15227.

    As my brother-in-law was a great dad and husband. I have many memories of him. I don't remember a time in my life that he was not in it. Many picnics in the backyard and just laying around the backyard pool, great memories. My favorite was Michael playing a guitar in his room and Rick playing music in his room and Joyce sitting at the pool and Uncle Don laying on the living floor combing his underarm hairs watching TV like I'm okay. Great memories had by many. May you rest in peace Uncle Don. You boys had a great father.

    I'll always remember the day when Don and I took our grandsons, Tanner and Easton to the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum in Oakland. As we came upon an Army jeep... Don proudly told the boys how he drove one just like it! We grandparents love to share stories with our grandchildren.

    My beloved Uncle Don...you were so much more than an Uncle to me. I'm sure I speak for all the nieces and nephews in saying there is no Uncle quite like you...just hearing your name sparks countless memories and laughs. You brought so much joy to all of our lives....and for me, you and my Aunt Joyce were one of the greatest blessings I ever had. I wasn't fortunate to know my Grandparents on my Mom's side...but you both made up for that. You both always made me feel so special and loved; I'll be eternally grateful for all that you've done in my life. My prayers are with the beautiful family you've left behind...may you all find peace in his passing, knowing that he finally will be with the love of his life watching down on all of you; I know they both are so proud of each and every one of you!
