Obituary For Dr. Mary Frances Archey

Dr. Mary Frances Archey, Ed.D/NCC Vice President of Academic Affairs, Emeritus, CCAC, age 75, died on Monday June 19, 2023 at UPMC St. Margaret’s. Dr. Archey was born on September 15, 1947, in Elkins WV and raised in Johnstown, PA. She earned her undergraduate degree in Sociology from the University of Pittsburgh, master’s degree in Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and doctorate in Education from West Virginia University. A dedicated educator, she served as Dean of Students at West Virginia Northern Community College (Wheeling) then at Community College of Allegheny County in various academic positions, finally attaining Vice President of Academic Affairs. She enjoyed volunteering in many areas, including the Greater Pittsburgh Area Food Bank, McKeesport Area History and Cultural Museum, instructing for the Foundation of Hope at the Allegheny County Jail, doing projects for Pittsburgh Cares-Retired Senior Volunteer Project, and for her church, Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma professional educators, Beta Sigma Phi, and a member of the National Board of Certified Counselors. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ross and Carmela Onofaro. She is survived by her devoted husband of forty-one years, Rick Archey, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and brothers and sisters in law. Friends will be received at the John Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday from 2-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Friday morning at 9:15. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish, St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Interment is private, in Johnstown, PA. Those wishing to donate in lieu of flowers may do so to Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish, 139 Gill Hall Road, Jefferson Hills, PA 15025.

    Dr. Archey was a consummate professional, always supporting students, mentoring faculty and junior administrators. I admired her work ethic, note-taking skills and thoughtfulness. She left her academic mark on CCAC and I will always remember her kindness towards me. RIP.

    What a loss — Mary Frances will be greatly missed.
