Obituary For Edward Joseph Haney

March 11, 1924 - December 21, 2014

Haney, Edward Joseph Beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, died peacefully on Sunday, December 21st, 2014, in his 91st year, in State College, PA.

Although Ed's final days were in Happy Valley, he will be returning to his beloved Pittsburgh for his final rest. Born on Mount Washington in Pittsburgh, Ed spent most of life in the borough of Brentwood and lived in Pleasant Hills prior to moving to State College in 2013. Edward will be remembered as a generous, fun-loving spirit, a loyal, dedicated friend, and as a great counselor, communicator and coach. Ed is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 63 years, Jane (Twigger); his devoted children Janet Haney, Patti DiSanto (Dale), Brian Haney (Charlie Buscemi); his beloved daughter-in-law Andrea Haney (wife of his late son, Bruce); his beloved grandchildren, Ryan DiSanto, Sara Haney Stroud (Kelvin), Kelli DiSanto (Justin Lotter), Kevin DiSanto, and Mackenzie Haney; brother-in-law, Bill Twigger; and many nieces and nephews. Ed is pre-deceased by his parents, Joseph and Hilda, his sister Mary Braun, brother Paul, son Bruce, and sister-in-law Mabel Speicher. Serving in the Installation Division, Ed worked 37 years for Western Electric. Ed is known well for his life-time of service and commitment to his country, his community and to his family and friends. As a World War II veteran, Ed served his country in the Navy AROU II, in the Philippines. Ed believed in giving back, cared deeply for his wide circle of friends, family, and community, and gave extensively of his time and talent to help others. Representative of Ed's desire to give back to his community, Ed served on Brentwood Council for almost two decades, many years as President of Council, as well as the Allegheny County Boroughs Association and the Pennsylvania State Boroughs Association. Ed was an excellent athlete and sports fan, and directed a lot of energy towards this passion. Many lives were touched by Ed's active involvement in the Brentwood Athletic Association where he served many years as both Commissioner and as a youth coach. Ed was also involved with the Brentwood Library and the Brentwood Planning Commission. He was a member of the Brentwood VFW Post 1810. Ed will be missed by the many who love him deeply, which include his family, his friends, and the extended family at Hearthside Rehabilitation and Nursing in State College, PA, where Ed received extraordinary care over the past seven months. In his unique and inimitable style, Ed slipped away from us on the Lord's Day, on winter's solstice, and left us with the gift of knowing that each day following this one would be increasingly lighter until we reach summer...the gift of optimism to help us on our way. Visitation will be at the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, Friday, December 26th from 1-8 p.m. A VFW Service will be held Friday evening at 7 pm. A blessing funeral service will be held on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at John F. Slater Funeral Home. Interment will be in Allegheny County Memorial Park. If desired, our family suggests contributions to the Brentwood Library (3501 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh PA 15227) or to Goodwill of SW Pennsylvania (118 52nd Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15201).

Jane and family, I was deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Ed. Ed was one of the first people I sold 4th of July Raffle tickets with at Whitehall Shopping Center and it was really he who got me so involved in our Wonderful Brentwood Community. He taught me the true meaning of giving back and the rewards one can receive from that. I will never forget his warm, friendly smile and his hugs everytime I ran into him. Ed was truly a gentleman and will be remembered as such. My thougths and prayers are withi you and yoru family. I'm so sorry I missed the visitation but I pay my respects now, may he rest in peace. With fond admiration, Donna Werner
