September 30, 1917- October 2, 2017 Wiest, Elisabeth Paul Elisabeth Paul Wiest was born in Philadelphia, PA on September 30, 1917. After graduating from high school, she trained as a Medical Laboratory Technician at the Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and worked in a pathology lab at Methodist Hospital. She also served in the Army Air Forces Aircraft Warning Service during World War II, watching at night for enemy aircraft over the eastern seaboard. She married Walter E. Wiest in 1943. In 1957 they moved to Pittsburgh where Dr. Wiest took a teaching position at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Mrs. Wiest worked for the Association for Retarded Citizens - Allegheny as a floor supervisor for over 16 years until her retirement in 1982. She served on the board of the South Hills Interfaith Ministries (SHIM), both as President and as head of various committees. After leaving the board, she continued to volunteer, helping to start a food pantry and serving for a while as acting director of direct services. In 1991, she was named one of the Post-Gazette's Outstanding Citizens and was awarded a Jefferson Medal from the American Institute for Public Service for her volunteer work. The Wiests lived in Mt. Lebanon for 43 years until 2000, when they moved to Friendship Village of South Hills in Upper St. Clair. Mrs. Wiest is survived by four children, three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Friendship Village on Saturday, October 14 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Hills Interfaith Ministries.
