Obituary For Elizabeth A. Qualters

February 26, 1923 - May 20, 2014 Qualters, Elizabeth Ann (Malloy), of Brentwood, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at the age of 91. She was born on February 26, 1923 in Pittsburgh, PA , one of nine children born to Charles and Irene (McNerney) Malloy. Betty graduated from St. Mary of the Mount High School where she also played the church organ and from Duquesne University with a B.S. in Business Administration. She married James Raymond Qualters of McKeesport, PA in 1949. Jim and Betty had six children followed closely by his death in 1958. As a widow, Betty raised her six children, whose ages at the time ranged from two months to eight years old, to be avid readers, self-sufficient, positive in outlook, and caring of others. Affectionately known as "Sister Betty," she was a devoted teacher for St. Sylvester School for over 26 years and loved English literature, and had fond memories of her students, some of whom still maintained contact many years after her retirement at the age of 65. She was a beloved model of strength, independence, and humor to her family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and all eight siblings, most recently in April, by her younger sister, Jeanne Malloy O'Neil. Betty is survived by four sons, James (and Debra Vails-Qualters), Richard (and Celeste Farnsworth), William (and Lynn) and Thomas (and Rose); and two daughters, Irene (and William Simpson) and Elizabeth (and David Nunamaker). She was a caring grandmother to DeAnna Qualters (David) Houston, Elisa (Richard Sullivan) Qualters, Justin Malloy (Vasudha) Mallgrave, Jaylen Vails, Julie Vails, Lena Vails, Hallie Nunamaker, and David Nunamaker. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Dylan, Stevie, Ryan, Wen-lei, Brandon, Billie-Jo, Sienna, Kylie, Luca, Isabella, Genevieve, Gabrielle, Brody and Penny. She leaves many nieces and nephews from both the Malloy and Qualters families. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, Sunday from 2-8 p.m. There will be no visitation on Monday. Funeral Prayer on Tuesday morning at 9:15. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Sylvester Church at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to St. Sylvester Angel Fund, 3754 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227.
