Obituary For Ernest W. Vattimo

Of Pleasant Hills, passed unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the age of 68. Ernie was born on September 21, 1956 in Ingram, PA.

Ernie "Munge" leaves behind his cherished wife, Barbara (Braunegg) of 22 years. Ernie is survived by his mother, Carol Vattimo, and his sister, Susan (Richard) Rodack and his nephews Patrick (Laura) Rodack and Stephen Rodack and his niece, Kristen Rodack. He is preceded in death by his father Ernest Vattimo.

After graduating from Montour High School, he began his career at Duquesne Light and retired in 2016 from NRG after 41 years.

Ernie was a giver his entire life and was always the first to lend a hand and was involved in his community in many ways. He volunteered at Pleasant Hills Arboretum where he enjoyed the outdoors work. Ernie was essential to the Arbor because he owned a truck. He was a crew member for Vintage Wings, Inc. that restored a 1942 WWII C-53 plane called "Beach City Baby" housed at Franklin Regional Airport. Ernie had traveled with the plane as a load master to air shows. He was also the chair of the Pleasant Hills Zoning Board and was a board of director at Baldwin EMS where he served since 1982. He was a volunteer EMT at Baldwin EMS for many years where he touched many peoples lives with his compassion. Ernie also was a past volunteer fireman at Option, Baldwin #1 and Pleasant Hills Fire Departments. He enjoyed volunteering at the Cloverleaf Food Bank where he had smiles for everyone and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus at Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish.

Ernie was special and will be remembered as enjoying life and telling stories. He would be the first at any party and the last to leave. Ernie's wife, Barbara is saddened and heartbroken that "Her Ernie" has passed, but grateful they found each other.

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Sunday, June 8, 2025 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Monday morning at 9:15. Mass of Christian Burial in Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish, St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church at 10:00 a.m.

Sorry to hear of Ernie's passing and my condolences to the entire Vattimo family. I knew Ernie from our time together at Baldwin #1 fire company many years ago and he was a good man and a good firefighter who was not afraid to run towards the fire. You can't ask for more than that. RIP and God bless. Ken Ziolkowski

Pam and I want you to know that you have our deepest condolences. We are going to miss him. I do believe that he is in God's hands with no worries or pain. We will miss him. With our deepest sympathy, God Bless, Ernie is in good hands. Larry and Pamela Bunda

Barbara, My deepest sympathy. Ernie was my good friend at the Pleasant Hills Arboretum. I am going to miss him so much. He was a great source of support for the Arboretum. He was the go-to-guy to fix tools, put machines in good order, and always stepped in when help was needed. Recently, we had so much fun putting up tree signs, flags, and banners. When I asked him if the Board could do something special for the Veteran's Shingle Oak tree, he went out of his way to pay special tribute to all the military services. We had so many laughs and good times working together. His kindness and good nature was a blessing to all who had the opportunity to benefit from his presence. He will always be in my heart. Thank you, Ernie. Love from the Arboretum, your friend, Paul Beck

I went to Montour with Ernie. We were in Mr. Ullman's social studies class and we were in the lighting crew for the musicals. He was the keeper of the board that controlled the lighting for the stage . I was hoping to see him at our 50th reunion. He will be missed. He left good memories and I will keep him and your family in my prayer

I met Ernie at the Elrama Power Station, where he was a Control Room Operator. He was quite knowledgeable and always had a huge smile on his face. He was a member of the IBEW Local 29. I started working there in late 2008 and Ernie was a great teacher, showing me where things were.

From 2018 to 2025, I spent many weekends with Ernie, Jeremy Aaron & Wayne Aaron driving from Pittsburgh to Beach City, Ohio and Franklin, Pennsylvania as we rescued, restored, and brought back to life our WWII C-53 "Beach City Baby." Ernie was there every single step of the way, and every weekend as we rescued our airplane. He never once complained or asked when we were going home. He was there from sunup to sundown making it happen. We are going to miss him terribly.

Ernie was an Amazing Volunteer at the Cloverleaf Pantry. He was a "Go-To" guy because he always accepted the mission! and with a smile!! The more missions I offered, the more I realized what a truly good guy he was! Ernie must have accepted an angel's mission..too soon for us but Godspeed for him! Our hearts are with you Barbara.
