Obituary For Fred J. "Pup" Brendel

Age 100, passed on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, after a brief illness.

Beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, veteran, mailman, real estate salesman, teller of stories and all-around character has gone on to his heavenly home, where he will, no doubt, be driving.

He was born in Pittsburgh in 1922 to Frederick A. and Susanna. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mildred Trageser and Helen Brunner. He was married to his great love, Eleanor Pfeuffer, from 1946 until her death in 2003. Father of Gary (Anne), Linda (Steve) Henderson, Mark (Shelly), Jay (the late Sue), and the late Eric (survived by Christy). He leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Fred was outgoing and friendly, and with his amazing sense of humor, made new friends everywhere. It is rumored that he knew everyone in the South Hills and probably sold them a house. His approach to his senior years was to "get up every day and go do something"! Well into his 90's he attended daily mass, bowled, belonged to a senior group, had breakfast with the guys at Bruegger's, made stained glass pieces, did woodworking, and helped anyone who needed him: in his younger years building closets, upholstering, roofing a house, adding a deck, a porch or a room. He was talented and could do it all.

He taught us all to enjoy life, to live it fully and optimistically, with humor and love. He resides now in the presence of his Lord and Savior, with his beloved wife and family who have passed before him. And, boy, does he have some stories for them!

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Monday, October 10, 2022 from 2-4, and 6-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Tuesday morning at 9:15. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church at 10:00 a.m., 5200 Greenridge Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15236. Followed by interment in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church.

Dear Linda, I didn't know your father except from what you had told me. I would have liked to have met him. He and my father may bump into one another in their celestial home and I am confident they will become friends. How could they not considering your family and the Osborn's and Keenan's! You were a loving, generous, and caring daughter who should be comforted with all of the wonderful memories you have in your heart and all of the accolades of the people whose paths he crossed. Take care, my friend. Jan Osborn Thompson.

Gary, Linda, Mark, and Jay My heart goes out to you as you mourn the loss of your wonderful father. I will never forget my first meeting with him when precious Seth passed away. He was a mountain of a man, indomitable in Spirit and indefatigable in strength and fortitude! He was indeed a force of Nature and you are all so blessed to have had him as your Dad. Though the loss of Pup, your Mom, Rick, and Michael Seth makes a huge hole in your lives, I know you are forever blessed to have your memories! Remember, love never dies; it just changes form!! I love you all very much, Jean

I would like to offer my deepest and most sincere condolences on the recent loss of your father. You all must be suffering the pains of a great loss. I got to know Mr. Brendel a little over 50 year ago, when Mark and I met and became good friends. I remember Mr. Brendel as a person with a great sense of humor, always smiling and telling funny stories and jokes. To this day, I remember him telling me one of his jokes. I can still hear him telling it to me like it was yesterday. That's how I remember your father. I would like very much to be with all of you at this time to celebrate and honor his life. Unfortunately, I am in New York State at this time, visiting with two of my grandchildren, making memories with them. I would be there if I could. I will pray for him and for you and your families, knowing that there is now a hole in your lives that can never be filled. May he rest in peace, And God bless you all. Your friend forever, from Ruxton Street, Jack King
