Obituary For George C. Kohler

December 29, 1915 - December 14, 2018

Kohler, George C., age 102, formerly of Whitehall, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on Friday, December 14, 2018. George was born on December 29, 1915 in Pittsburgh to the late Christ and Rose Kohler. As a young man with children and working full-time, he put himself through college at Carnegie Tech, studying mechanical engineering. He worked for Mesta Machine Company designing rolling mills for the United States steel industry. During World War II, he helped design the world's largest bazooka. He retired in 1981 after 46 years at Mesta. George was an active member of Saint Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church in Whitehall. He was an usher, a member of the men's club and the parish council. He enjoyed many hobbies including bowling, gardening, cooking and candy making (the best fudge maker) and golfing; he was very proud of his 250-foot hole-in-one at the age of 71. He also loved spending time with his family and watching the Steelers and Pirates games. George was married for 67 years to the late Rita Anna (Kuntz), his high school sweetheart. He was a loving father to Joan (Charles) Schubert, James Kohler (Geraldine Mabey), Susan (Michael) Bieltz, Elizabeth (Charles) Kirschner, Carol (Michael) Lavra and the late George Kohler, Jr. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His advice was to do the best you can; life's not easy. Work. Do things you like. Be happy. "I've had quite a life!" We would like to thank Paramount Senior Living in Baldwin for their exceptional care over the past nine years. Friends and relatives will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 from 3-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Wednesday morning at 9:15. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church at 10:00 a.m.

My deepest and heartfelt sympathies to the family of George. I work at Paramount as a server and it was my pleasure and honor to have known George. He was the sweetest man. He lived a long and wonderful life and his family is evidence of that. May knowing that he is at peace and in heaven with God our Father bring you all peace and comfort at this time.
