Obituary For George H. Conley

December 6, 1925 - June 18, 2016 George H. Conley, Ph.D., of Pleasant Hills, PA, passed away peacefully at home on June 18, 2016. He was 90 years old. Catherine C. Conley, his beloved wife of 56 years, predeceased him in 2007. George is survived by his sister, Alicia Shea (Maurice) of Naples, FL; 8 children, Polly of Seattle, WA, Maureen (Carter) of Charleston, WVA, Tom of Pittsburgh, PA, Chris (Tricia) of Darien, CT, Mike (Ann) of Lincoln University, PA, John (Maria Jose) of Roanoke, VA, Cathleen (Steve) of Pittsburgh, and Clare of Boston, MA; 13 grandchildren, Sara, Brennan, Alicia, Carolyn, John, Christy, Chris, Jon, Katie, David, Andrew, Michael, and Emma; and, 3 great grandchildren, Lana, Knox, and Rielle; and many nieces and nephews.

George was employed at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation from 1951 until his retirement in 1989. While at Bettis, George was the chief test engineer for the prototype reactor and the refueling of the U.S.S Nautilus. He has 3 patents in nuclear reactor design, one of which resulted in the development and installation of the breeder reactor at the Shippingport Nuclear Power Plant. At retirement he was the Manager of Reactor Technology. George received a Bachelor's (1946) and Master's Degree (1951) in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and his Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh (1972). George's life revolved around family, faith, education, friends and the Pittsburgh Pirates, passions that retirement gave him the opportunity to enjoy. He and Catherine were delighted by their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, took great pride in their achievements, and never tired of seeing all of them at graduations, weddings, and baptisms. He was especially happy cooking dinner for his family and was famous for his dessert flambé. George and Catherine were devout Catholics. He was an active parishioner of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, Baldwin, PA for 60 years, attended daily Mass and prayed the rosary every morning. George never lost his passion for learning new things, especially in the world of science, from books, articles and intelligent people who shared his own insatiable curiosity. George enjoyed sharing meals with his friends from St. Elizabeth's and Bettis. He never missed a Pirate game and was thrilled with the team's recent success. George will be remembered for the grace and joy he brought to everything he did in life. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Funeral Prayer on Thursday morning at 10:15. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Germaine Church at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to National Multiple Sclerosis Society - PA, Keystone Chapter, 1501 Reedsdale St., Ste. 105, Pittsburgh, PA 15233.

You have my sympathy for the loss of your father. He was the most kind man I have ever met I worked for Dr. Conley as his secretary for 15 years and with my 45years at Bettis, he was the best " boss" you could have hoped for. He was working on his PhD and I typed his doctorial thesis on KINETICS. There were no words in it, only GREEK symbols, but we made it through. He even thanked me for the typing in a note in the beginning of the paper. Made me very proud. He was a wonderful, gentle man and will be missed.
