Obituary For George J. Owens, Jr.

Owens, George J., Jr., age 69, peacefully at home with his family at his side, on Friday, August 16, 2024, of Brentwood, formerly of Castle Shannon. Beloved husband of 51 years to Robin L.(Nedley); loving and devoted father of Dawn M. (Chris) Ziegler, Teri L. and the late George R. Owens; proud Pop to Alayna (Jason) DeFelice, C.J., Joshua and Nathan Ziegler. George was incredibly excited to be a great-grandfather in November. Brother of Vic (Colleen), Lenore and the late Jeff Owens. Also will be missed by many in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. George was a long-time employee at Duquesne Light. He spent most of his time at the Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station as an instrumentation controls technician. George was well known for his love and devotion to friends and family. His commitment to others extended beyond that circle. George passionately and tirelessly served on various boards and committees helping the disability community. As a proud resident of Brentwood, he was a loyal, helpful neighbor and served on the community zoning board for many years. He had a vast knowledge and expertise in many realms. George never stopped learning and trying to figure things out. His true love was sharing that knowledge and teaching. He never missed an opportunity to enrich others. Most recently, he took pride in being an instructor at Steel Center Vocational-Technical School. George had many pastimes. However, he was happiest just spending time with his people. His kids and grandkids "just filled him up"! Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Sunday and Monday, August 18 & 19 from 3-7 p.m. Funeral prayer on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial in Blessed Trinity Parish, St. Sylvester Church at 10:30. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to Drop the Puck on Cancer at dropthepuckoncancer.com.

Robin, Teri, Dawn and family, George was the kindest soul I ever knew. When I taught Teri and young George at CI, all of those years ago, I made a bond for life. We may not see one another, but your family helped to mold me into a teacher who cared about families, not just students. I was enriched for having met you, all. With loving kindness, Michelle

So sorry to read of George's passing. I saw him a few weeks ago and we talked for a few minutes. We meet about 5 years ago on the Trap range @ CSC. I remember him being so proud when he would introduce his grandson to other members and how he enjoyed teaching him the sport. George offered me his experiences with shoulder surgery & every time we would see each other he would always ask me how my surgery went. George was a true caring & compassionate person. So sorry for his family for your loss. Mark & Deb Connors

I am an employee at The Woodlands, George would always stop by the kitchen & offer up good conversation with us. It was always a pleasure to see him when he'd drop off his daughter for camp. Rest in peace, George. You will be missed. ❤️

When we were little kids, I was particularly little. I remember George being a protector of us little kids. He felt like an adult in ways, but had that smile and laugh like a young boy. I am so glad that I was able to reconnect with George and Hub through our St. Anne's reunions. I will miss those Owens boys. Jimmy Miller

I will remember many conversations about AAC, advocacy, independence, society and politics, and life. And that is really just the beginning. You created a strong family who will miss you everyday but live life as fully as possible with one of their stars looking from another place. Rest now as you've angel work to do.

What a wonderful man who will be dearly missed. George was a truly heartfelt advocate for people with disabilities, and a true and loving friend to all who knew him. I never knew him to be anything but kind and gentle. His legacy is the beautiful family he created and his wide circle of friends.
