Obituary For Harold Lewis Berkoben Jr.

August 16, 1930 - May 23, 2018

Berkoben, Harold Lewis, Jr. Age 87, on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, of Whitehall .

Born in Pittsburgh in 1930, Harold grew up in Wilmerding, and graduated from Westinghouse Memorial High School in 1948, where he was a lineman on the football team. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and attended Geneva College on the GI Bill, graduating in 1956. At Geneva he met his future wife, Joann Colteryahn, and they married in 1956. They were married 59 years until her death in 2016. Harold worked for Batavia Publishing Company. After retirement he and Joann spent many happy winters with their Pittsburgh family in Charleston S.C. His main passion was serving his beloved Whitehall Borough. He was involved in boys baseball and football as manager, commissioner, and president. In 1972 he started girls softball. He was president of Whitehall Community Lions Club and served as a member of Whitehall Borough Council for 16 years, serving three years as president. After all his effort, Mayor Nowalk proclaimed August 23, 2014 as Harold L. Berkoben Day. Harold spent the last four years of his life at Overlook Green. Friends and family thank Overlook Green and 365 Hospice for the care rendered. Thanks to sister-in-law Judy Dunaway, Charles Dunaway, Jodi Lassinger, Rosalie Kochenbach, Bill Gazica and Bucky Yatsko for their very frequent visits during the last years of his life. Harold is survived by his son Michael S. Berkoben, MD of Durham, NC, sister-in-law Judy (Charles) Dunaway of Gibsonia, and nieces and nephews Jodi (Ray) Lassinger, Matthew (Gina) Dunaway, Mark (Jennifer) Dunaway and their families. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 30, 2018 in Baldwin Community United Methodist Church at 11 AM. Arrangements handled by the John F.     Hi Mike, Sorry for your loss of your father. My mom lived at Maiden Bridge for a while, and I remember seeing him down there. I sure he was at out T league games cheering us on. Maybe i will see you at the 40th class reunion in July, Tom Hughes

    My condolences to the family of Harold Berkoben. Harold was more a brother than a cousin. Harold, my brother Danny and I grew up together. We shared the love of the huge family of Berkobens. Harold and I often shared those memories. He will be missed by my wife Smitty and I.
