Obituary For Harvey A. Means

August 27, 1923 - October 2, 2018

Means, Harvey A. Age 95, of Jefferson Hills, previously of Baldwin, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, October 2, 2018.

Loving husband of 65 years to the late Mary Joan Means; father of Michael H. (Lois) Means and Joan Lynne Means (Glenn) Critchfield; grandfather of Michael H. (Lervin) Means, II; brother of Olive Reese and Ruth Buzzard. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Harvey proudly served in the US Navy during WWII aboard the USS Arkansas - BB33. He was aboard during the invasion of Africa, Italy, Normandy, and in the South Pacific. He was a loyal member of Steamfitters Local #449 for 71 years and served the Union as a Trustee for the Multiple Funds for nine years. He was instrumental in establishing the pension fund and the IRA for the Steamfitters Union. Harvey grew up in Oakland in the shadow of Forbes Field, where he first started as an usher in 1938. He later became a ticket taker, moving to Three Rivers Stadium, and then on to PNC Park and Heinz Field. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Monday, October 8, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. where funeral services will be held on Tuesday morning at 9:30. Interment will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Southwestern Pennsylvania World War II Memorial, P.O. Box 23143, Pittsburgh, PA 15222-6143.

    My thoughts and prayers are with the Means at this time with heartfelt sympathy. I remember Harvey when I was growing up in Bethel Park. My parents Jack and Sue Lype just loved Harvey! He was always so nice to our family. A truly wonderful person!!
