Age 84, of Baldwin, PA, passed away peacefully on November 20th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Known for his warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication to family, Hugh’s life was one well-lived. Born on April 29, 1940, to Scottish immigrants Annie and Andrew Docherty in Swissvale, PA, Hugh began his life’s journey with a strong work ethic that would define him for decades. After graduating from Braddock High School in 1958, he kicked off a 40+ year career in sales, where his natural charisma and work ethic earned him the respect and admiration of all who worked with him. In 1964, Hugh met the love of his life, Marlene Shawkey, through a mutual friend. They married, and together, they raised four children. Hugh never had the opportunity to play soccer as a child, but he was determined to share his joy of the game with his children. He became a dedicated coach, referee, and the driving force behind the Baldwin Whitehall Soccer Association. With his trademark coppery red hair and ever-present enthusiasm, “Mr. D.” became a beloved figure on the soccer field. Whether he was coaching or just cheering from the sidelines, he had a knack for making everyone feel welcome, and his infectious spirit left a lasting impact on countless families. In his retirement, Hugh found a new passion: genealogy. He spent countless hours researching his family history, uncovering stories and tracing long-lost relatives not only in the U.S. but across the globe in Scotland, Ireland, and Australia. His deep curiosity for the past filled his days with discovery, yet he was always fully present, generously offering his wisdom, humor, and endless love to those he held dear. Hugh was a lifelong learner, earning his college degree while working full-time and raising a family. He encouraged his children to be well-rounded and he practiced what he preached, always looking for ways to better himself while supporting those around him. As a man of strong faith, Hugh lived his Catholic values every day and was active in his church community, serving in many ways throughout his life. Hugh was predeceased by his parents, Annie and Andrew Docherty. He is survived by his “long-suffering” wife, Marlene; his children: Hugh Docherty (Nancy-Rose Netchi), Cathie Docherty (Tod Schmidt), Andy Docherty (Bridgette), Christine Docherty May (Dave); his brother, John Docherty; his sister, Anne Johannes; and his beloved grandchildren: Brayden Docherty, Coleman Docherty, Garrison Docherty, Drew May, and Mary May. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, Friday, November 22, 2024, 2-4 p.m. and 6-8p.m. Funeral Prayer on Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your local food bank, a cause near and dear to Hugh's heart. Hugh’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and his warmth, kindness, and sense of humor will never be forgotten.
