Stavros, James Christ

Age 99, born February 14, 1915, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2014. Born and raised in Ikaria, Greece to Christodoulos and Maria (Rousta) Stavrinadis. He immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 15 to join his father, intending to attend Carnegie Tech. Jim's future was altered when his father was severely injured in an accident and returned to Greece. Jim entered the restaurant business at the William Penn where he met his beloved late wife, of 66 years, Martha Papuga. After serving in the U.S. Army as an Artillery Tech Sgt. with the Americal Division in the South Pacific Theater Jim returned to Pittsburgh and continued his restaurant career; eventually opening his own restaurant, The Dinner Bell, on Liberty Avenue. Jim also managed The Wheel Café for many years. Jim was an avid photographer, long time member of the Lions Club, and Champion Duck Pin Bowler winning the Central Pittsburgh Duck Pin League in 1960. Preceding him in death were his siblings Stavros Stavrinadis and Despina Makka. Survived by his children Jay (Cheryl), Christine Hunsinger (Doug), Barbara Duff (Al), granddaughter Emily Duff Bartel (Nick), and his favorite furry friend, Holly; also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws in both the United States and Greece. Jim will be fondly remembered for his quiet demeanor, gracious hospitality, and regaling stories and quotes. Friends and family will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, 15227, on Thursday, May 22, 2014 from 4-8 pm. Services will be Friday, May 23, 2014 at 9:15 am at the funeral home followed by burial at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
