December 21, 1921 - June 12, 2014 Fowler, James E. Captain, US Army (Ret), "a true American hero", passed away peacefully on June 12, 2014, at the age of 92, of Whitehall, PA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Henny (Lorenz). Jim enlisted in the Army as a private in 1940 at Pittsburgh, PA. Sgt. Fowler was stationed at Schofield Barrack when Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japanese forces on 7 Dec., 1941. He was then assigned to Ft. Benning, Ga where he completed OCS and was commissioned an Infantry 2nd Lt. He was then assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division as a Platoon Leader. In Sept. 1944, 1st Lt. Fowler parachuted into Holland, where he was awarded the Combat Infantrymans Badge, and the Bronze Star for bravery under fire. In Dec. 1944, the 82nd Airborne Division participated in the "Battle of the Bulge." During this battle, Capt. Fowler was severely wounded, resulting in the loss of his entire left leg, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart and the 2nd Bronze Star for bravery. After 14 months of extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation, Capt. Fowler was retired from the United States Army for physical disability in. Capt. Fowler's courage, daring and leadership in operations of historic importance reflects great credit upon himself, the 82nd Airborne Division and the United States Army. Jim married his childhood friend and "true love of his life" Henny in June 1945. Jim retired from the United States Army in April 1946. Graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1952 and had a long and successful career at Mine Safety Appliance. A long-time member of South Hills Country Club, Jim, the self-proclaimed best one-legged golfer at the club, served as honorary starter for several years and was an integral part of the club's annual Ryder Cup event. His humor, charming wit, kindness and his sincere friendship will be missed and cherished by all that had the honor of spending any time with him! Friends will be received at the John F.
