James W. Gump

Obituary For James W. Gump

Age 94, died peacefully at his residence on March 16, 2020.

Beloved husband of Margaret V. Gump; loving father of James and Douglas Gump and grandfather of Bradley Merkl-Gump. Originally from New Freeport PA, he grew up in Waynesburg, PA. James was a World War II Army veteran in Europe. He was a graduate of Carnegie Tech with a masters in music education, and became the long-time instrumental music teacher and band director in the Baldwin-Whitehall school district, including director of the marching band. He was a long-time parishioner of Saint Peters Episcopal in Brentwood, a long-time member of Masonic lodge 45, and served in the Syria Shrine concert and marching bands. Entombment will be private and a memorial service in his honor will be held at a future date. Arrangements entrusted to the John F.     Douglas Gump

    I will miss my father, he was a good man, he taught me my lifelong passion for fishing, he stood by me and accompanied me numerous times while I was learning the bagpipes and playing across the country in competitions, we enjoyed our time together, and he taught me to have a love for music. He taught me to not be afraid to tinker with things and try to fix things instead of throwing them away. He was frustrated over the last several years due to his reduced mental capacity, my mother has stood by his side and was his primary caretaker for him. I know that they loved each other deeply and my mother misses him terribly. With love, may you rest in peace and look down upon mom and help to keep her strong. Doug
