Obituary For John A. Schirra

Age 77, on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, of Upper St. Clair.

Loving husband of Dorothy Hamel Schirra; father of John A. Schirra of Cody, WY and Wesley (Emily) Schirra of Charlotte, NC; grandfather of Nealy, Aidan, Maeve, Kellen and Ronan; son of the late Howard and Margaret Schirra; brother of Faith Shultz, Barbara Sycora and Sandra Bulger. Also survived by nieces and nephews. John proudly served in the U.S. Army and his patriotism continued throughout his life. His great sense of humor lit up any room with smiles and laughter. John's love of baseball made him the Pirates number one fan. He often told stories about going to Forbes Field and growing up in Highland Park. Cooking and grilling were his passions. Making and sharing special recipes gave him much joy. The neighborhood children loved his heart of gold, playing ball and building forts in his yard. The highlight of John's life were his five grandchildren. The internet gave him an abundance of joy with photos of their life in Charlotte, North Carolina. John's love, laughter and great personality will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to St. Clair Hospital and Gallagher Hospice staff for their excellent, loving care for John. Friends will be received at John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning at 10:00 in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2040 Washington Road, Pittsburgh 15241. Please meet at church. If desired, family suggests contributions in John's honor to a charity of your choice.

John will forever rule over the neighborhood. He was always a fair umpire at the nightly wiffleball games and—without fail—made me laugh after a loss. He will always have a home in my heart—sitting alongside Dee on the porch. Sending my love, Haley
