Obituary For John Andrew Remark

Remark Sr., John Andrew

Age 84, of Brentwood, was taken into God's Arms on January 1, 2022. He was the devoted and loving husband of Thelma Jean Remark, the love of his life for over 63 years; cherished father of Monica (David) Tompkins of Jefferson Hills, John (Kathleen) Remark, Jr. of Mt. Lebanon and Jeffrey (Ruthanne) Remark of South Park; loving grandfather of Timothy (Shea) Tompkins and Elizabeth, Jack, Jeffrey, Jr. and Jonathan Remark; great grandfather of three; brother of Mary Therese "Gorey" (the late Robert) Doran. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. John was hired by Port Authority in 1964. He became Amalgamated Transit Local 85 Financial Secretary Officer, a position he served for 22 years, where he was a staunch fighter for worker's wages, improved working conditions and health care and pension benefits that improved thousands of union member's lives. Following his retirement, he was employed by the International ATU in Washington D.C. John was a devout Catholic and Oblate of St. Benedict member, attending yearly retreats at St. Vincent College over the span of 40 years. He was an usher and Eucharistic Minister at St. Sylvester Church for many years, volunteered at Kane Hospital as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and Knights of Columbus. John was also a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers season ticket holder and enjoyed attending Penguin games as well with family. He was a friend to all and helped everyone during his life. Thank you for the wonderful memories, laughter, generosity, support and guidance. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, Wednesday 2-8 pm. Funeral prayer on Thursday morning at 9:45. Mass of Christian Burial in Blessed Trinity Parish, St. Sylvester Church at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice in John's name or the St. Joseph House of Hospitality, 1635 Bedford Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15219.

    My Father, Walker E. Russell knew Mr. Remark, My Husband knew Mr. Remark as well. Both were P.A.T. drivers. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Remark as I was organizing a Union for the school bus company Laidlaw. He was always a gentleman. I will always have great respect for him,and the other gentlemen, that helped organize for us. My deepest sympathy.

    So sorry to hear of John's passing! He was a true gentlemen, and I always found it a pleasure to work with him during my years at Port Authority.     Timothy Julius Tompkins

    Some of you knew him as John, some "Bud", and for others he was Mr. Remark, but to me he was always Pap. As we all know, he was a great man & I will cherish all the good times I got to spend with him. From the countless Steelers games we went to together, holidays, birthdays, events & normal everydays. Like all great Paps, he taught me many things & was there to instill important values, but what I remember most is how my Pap made friends everywhere he went. If you went out to eat-he got to know the waiter, at the store-he got to know the clerk; in an elevator-he talked to the people you were riding with. His charisma was infectious & he always treated everyone with respect & aimed to brighten their day. I have tried to follow his lead & pass along the values he showed me to my children. Now when I'm out with my kids & they begin talking to someone they meet, I see my grandfather in them. While Pap will surely be missed, I'm certain wherever he is now, he is making new friends until we can all see him again later. Love you, Pap Timothy Julius Tompkins & Family

    To the Remark Family, I was very sorry to read of John's passing. I got to know him well through the Allegheny County Labor Council and Local 85. He was a very honorable man, devoted to his family, his faith and to the union movement. John will be greatly missed by so many people whose lives he touched in so many positive ways.
