Age 98, passed away peacefully on Veteran’s Day, Saturday, November 11, 2023. Beloved husband of 64 years to Sylvia (Jordan) Bowen; son of the late Joseph and Annie (Smart) Bowen; brother of the late Anna Stanko, Thomas Bowen, Joseph Bowen, James Bowen and Mary Buchanan; brother-in-law of Nancy McDonald, Linda Mazek, Deborah D’Odorico, Angelo D’Odorico and the late Donald Jordan; special companion of Star, Paige, Penny, Sammy and Daisy; also survived by several nieces, nephews and their families. At the age of 18, he was drafted into the Army on June 18, 1943 to serve in World War II. He served under General George Patton in the 5th Armored Division. John received the Silver Star for Gallantry on December 21, 1944. In 2016, he was inducted into the Hall of Valor at the Soldiers & Sailors Hall in Oakland, PA. On August 28, 2018, John was awarded the Legion of Honor from the French Government for helping to extrapolate the French people. The French Consulate presented this award to John. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, PA 15227 on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 from 10 a.m. until concluding prayer at noon. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Park with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to Holy Angels Church, 408 Baldwin Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15207.
