Obituary For John F. Held

Age 90, of Providence Point formerly of Whitehall, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on Friday, November 12, 2021.

Beloved husband of 68 years to Lois T. Held; loving father of Kathy Schmidt, Kris (Marshall) Limetti and Karen (Bill) Leonard; caring Grampy of Michael (Brookshield) Schmidt, Matthew and Abby Schmidt; Cailin and Danny Limetti; Lauren (Jon) Kurtz and Hillary (Rob) Kaufman; proud Great-Grampy of two; brother of Rosemary Hare and the late Dan Held; brother-in-law of Ray Killen; also survived by many nieces, nephews and their families. John served in the United States Navy, he had a long time career in the steel industry as a metallurgist. He was also a long time member and dedicated volunteer at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Parish and St. Clair Hospital. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, Sunday, November 14, 2021 from 2-7 pm. Funeral Prayer on Monday morning at 9:15 am. Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Hope Parish in St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church at 10 am. Throughout his menu years at J&L Steel and Republic Steel, John solved many complex technical challenges and pioneered many new technologies. I will always remember his wisdom, his calm manner through thick or thin, and most-of-all his friendship.

    Uncle John was a great guy that, until recently, seemed to be the guy that would out live us all. Active and full of energy, he seemed unstoppable. I can picture Uncle John greeting St. Peter with a huge smile, a firm handshake and an innocent snide remark as he tap-danced his way thru the Pearly Gates.. He will be greatly missed.
