Obituary For Joseph F. Kazak, Jr.

Age 38, of Crafton died suddenly on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 due to complications following a recent medical procedure. He was the loving fiancé of Jay McDowell; dog-dad of Pierre and Willow; son of Joseph F. Kazak, Sr.; nephew of John and Karen Kazak, James Kazak, and the late Patti Reese; son-in-law of Sam and Sharon McDowell; brother-in-law of Mindi McDowell and Cory (Susan) McDowell; and uncle of Gemma and Cecilia.

To know Joe was to know a spirit of love, kindness, patience, and joy. He did his best to live life to the fullest and make as many memories along the way as possible. As someone who spent his entire life facing health challenges day in and out, he was deservedly proud of the work he did during his time in this world. Although he held various jobs over the years, his undisputed favorite was being known as a gifted baker. He was eager to be in the kitchen and share his creations with anyone wise enough to taste a morsel.

Joe was an avid lover of beauty in its many forms - the wonder of all things in nature (except bats in the house), incredible works of art, and even simple home decor. He loved decorating for different holidays and recently refinished the front door of the home he built with Jay. He thoroughly enjoyed live music, attending multiple concerts, musicals, and a couple of operas over the years. When not able to be there in person, he could be found regularly listening to music. His love for Taylor Swift was well known, as he was constantly listening to her music and frequently singing (and sometimes dancing) along. Joe was the kind of guy who would not be rushed to move the car from park as it was vital to turn on the music (and maybe the GPS) first.

He enjoyed learning about history through various forms of media and embracing any opportunity to visit historical sites over the years. He could frequently be found listening to a podcast or audiobook while cleaning and reorganizing the house in an attempt to improve the living space - or to frustrate Jay by making things more difficult to locate. Sadly, we’ll never know for sure.

He had an impeccable gift for seeing and often amplifying beauty all around him. He was often able to look beyond imperfections to bring out the true spirit of anything or anyone. He truly loved any chance he could find to support and brag about the artwork his friends made or anything his close friends or fiancé were to perform. One of his favorite pastimes was walking the aisles of Marshalls, Home Goods, or a local thrift store to see what he could find to decorate the home he shared with Jay. He absolutely adored his friends and was eager to welcome them in his and Jay’s home, go out on the town to spend time together, or simply catch up over the phone or a video call.

Words are insufficient for describing the soul of this man. All those who knew him are, without a doubt, the luckiest and most blessed. His loss is truly devastating, and the family asks that everyone honor him by living fully and authentically, caring for each other and for all of nature and humanity. More than anything, he longed for peace, unity, and genuine understanding in our troubled world.

Joe is also survived by countless loving friends, neighbors, and extended family. He was the grandson of the late Steve and Bertha Kazak, Robert and Wilma Reese, and Joyce Vogan. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been handled by John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227. Jay and family, I first met Joe when he moved in our neighborhood in Crafton. Always, friendly, especially helpful, especially our block parties. He just jumped in, with his sidekick Jay, and went over and beyond helping. Walking their dogs, almost said hello the entire walk! Everyone who encountered Joe loved him. He and Jay complimented each other. I can't believe he is gone. It is true that God truly takes the good ones and makes them his best angels! Joe would be proud of his! Because God gives the angels the biggest wings, depending on how much they are loved. And Joe has HUGE wings!
