Age 50, of Whitehall formerly of Baldwin, passed away suddenly on June 11, 2022. He is survived by his three loving sons, Joey, Alex, and Tyler, who were the center of his world. Beloved wife Michelle (Kenny) of 22 years and faithful puppy, Steele. Parents Joe and Rainey, sister, Dina Boyd (Frank), brother Mark (Sarah), nieces and nephew, Aly Boyd (Matt), Megan Boyd (Anthony), Kelsi Boyd, Ella and Grady Shields and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and cherished friends. He lived, he laughed, and loved the life he built with his family. Joe took great pride in painstakingly overseeing every detail of making their house a home. To know Joe Shields was to know his room brightening, engaging smile that he shared with us all. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, PA 15227 on Thursday, June 16th from 2-8pm. Funeral Prayer on Friday morning at 9:30. Mass of Christian Burial will be in Blessed Trinity Parish, St. Albert the Great Church at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been created to help the family. Dear Shields Family, I am so sorry for your sudden loss. I worked with Joe for many years at West Penn. I knew it would be a good shift when he was there! Even when he became a CHO! I also enjoyed comparing stories of 3 daughters verses 3 sons! and he loved talking about his sons! He was a good nurse and very good man. I feel fortunate to have known him. Rest assured you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry for your loss. I only knew Joe through work (Aetna) but he quickly became my favorite person to talk to over the phone. He was the kindest person and made another person's day better just by hearing his voice. I will miss him dearly.

The Shields Family, I would like to offer my sincere sympathy and prayers of hope for healing. I worked with Joe at SFMC on the night shift in the ED. The first things I thought of when heard the terrible news were how fun our nights would be, the Pittsburgh Steeler stats, Tagalongs (how he would eat a whole box at one sitting) and Chicken Pinwheels (1 of his favorite meals). Rest in peace Joe, you will be missed. Dina, so sorry for the loss of your brother. Kimmy Reichle

I am so sorry for your loss. I had only run in to Joe a few times since all of our formative years in the early '90's but he was easily one of the friendliest and most laid back people back then. If it is true that we all mellow with age then Joe was probably the calm in a lot of storms. My heart goes out to you Michelle.
