Obituary For Judith Ann "Judy Banana" Zarra

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Judith "Judy Banana" Zarra. Judy, a vibrant and beloved figure in the Pittsburgh community, leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, and unwavering dedication. Age 78, peacefully with her family after a courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, of Pittsburgh.

Beloved wife of 55 years to John J. Zarra, Sr.; loving mother of John J. (Melouny) Zarra, Jr. and the late Donald D. (survived by Jamie) Zarra; proud Grandma of John Joseph III, Julia Magdalina, Donato and Nelina Zarra; cherished sister of Connie (the late Scott) Stemple; predeceased by brothers and sisters; sister-in-law of Pamela Redden. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

For over five decades, Judy was a cornerstone of the city's nightlife and culinary scene. Her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for hospitality transformed her initial nightclub venture into the renowned Zarra's restaurant, a beloved establishment known for its exceptional Italian cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. More than just a successful businesswoman, Judy cultivated a space where countless individuals felt embraced and valued, creating a sense of community that extended far beyond the restaurant's walls.

Judy's kitchen was her canvas, her cooking a testament to her boundless energy and love. She poured her heart into each dish, ensuring every guest felt the warmth of her hospitality. Her infectious laugh, candid advice, and unwavering kindness touched the lives of countless friends, patrons, and even the children of her close friends, many of whom she treated as her own. Her genuine connection with others was a hallmark of her character.

Judy's impact transcended the culinary arts. She was a mother figure to many, offering support and love to those around her. Her devotion to her family, including her cherished husband, sons, grandchildren and beloved pets, exemplified the depth of her compassion.

While the void left by Judy's passing is immeasurable, the memories of her kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire us. Zarra's stands as a lasting tribute to her unwavering work ethic and dedication to her community. Her influence will resonate for generations to come.

I always loved visiting my grandmother's house, when we came into town, but my second thought was always going next-door and seeing you, Judy. You were a light in my childhood. I always knew if I came next-door and there would always be a warm smile a big hug a plate of cookies (my favorite with the ones with the Hershey kisses in the center). You always made me feel like I was one of your kids. I was always welcome in the pool to play with all the animals that you had and even if that wasn't enough, you were always quick to make me homemade bubbles and braid my hair. And I think you heard the ice cream man before any of us kids did and make sure we all got something. You have no idea how much your kindness meant to me and how much it was needed. Thank you for shining your light on me. You will never be forgotten and you will always be loved -Angela Neal
