Obituary For Lawrence "Bud" Simon

February 4, 1925 - April 3, 2015

Simon, Lawrence "Bud" Age 90, on Friday, April 3, 2015, of West Mifflin.

Beloved husband of the late Lois Simon; loving father of Larry (Thomasine) Simon and Lynn (Tom) Edenfield; proud Pappap of Elizabeth and Julie Kostilnik and Amanda Simon; brother of Loretta Coronado and the late Dorothy Hentosz; brother-in-law of Margaret Bergman. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his very dear friend Dottie Davies. Bud served in the Navy on submarines and was a life member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII. His true passion was archery. He enjoyed shooting and officiating, but most of all he loved teaching the youths, seniors and the physically-challenged. He was an active member of PSAA and NAA and in the early 1960's he cofounded the JOAD program at the Clairton Sportsmen's Club where he was very active until recently when his health declined. He was also a Certified National Judge in archery and volunteered at the '84 and '96 Olympic games. In 2002, he was chosen to help carry the Olympic Torch to Salt Lake City. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, where Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday at 10 am. If desired, family suggests contributions to the Clairton JOAD program via runcoarchery@gmail.com.

My condolences to the entire Simon family for your loss. Bud was the first person I talked when my son showed an interest in archery. From our first telephone conversation, Bud was enthusiastic, friendly, and extraordinarily easy to talk to. The archery program that Bud started remains today as the best youth learning, competitive, and sporting environment that I have encountered. I'll forever be indebted to Bud for introducing my son to a love of archery through the Junior Olympic Archery Development Program that Bud himself helped to start and subsequently coordinated unselfishly for so many years. Alan B. Staude, US Navy (Submarine Service) Retired
