Obituary For Leona M. (Lingenfelser) Hughes

Age 93, passed into Heaven on Wednesday, February 23, 2022.

Beloved wife of the late William; cherished Mom of Gary (Laura) Hughes, Gail Andersson and Lynne (Chris) Farabaugh; beloved Grandma Oni to Michael (Elin) Winder, Elizabeth (John) Twaddle, Christopher (Luke Stalzer) Farabaugh, Bryan Owens and the late Kelly Owens; Great-grandma Oni to Ryleigh, Ashlyn, William, Theodor, Cornelia, Danny and Grace. Leona was the precious daughter of the late Elsie and Joseph Lingenfelser and beloved sister of the late Betty Loadman, Grace "Gaye" Simpson and Joseph "Bud" Lingenfelser. She loved all of her family beyond measure. Oni had a beautiful childhood, blessed by two loving, Christian parents and three wonderful siblings who all loved one another dearly. All four of the Lingenfelser siblings were very special people who brought so much beauty, joy and laughter to the world around them. Oni thoroughly enjoyed music and loved playing the piano at church and her keyboard for family get-togethers. Oni was a beautiful Mom to her three children and she was an outstanding cook who loved to try new recipes. She enjoyed getting out and being in the workplace because of her great love for people of all kinds. She started her office career at J&L Steel in the late 40's. After taking a break to be a full-time homemaker, she became the secretary for Union Baptist Church for many years. She then worked in the office for Empire Bottle and finished off her career by working 10 years at Federated Investors in downtown Pittsburgh, retiring at age 80. Oni loved her children and grandchildren dearly and had many life-long friends of all ages. Her faith in God was the basis of her life and she was a true Christian in every sense of the word. She was kind, warm, loving and selfless. Oni loved to share laughter and she always made everything more fun when she was around. She loved all people and always saw the best in everyone.

I am sorry that I did not know soon enough to come to Slater's to meet Leona's family. I did not know her very well, but my deceased husband (James Altenhof) did. He was in the Air Force and would go roller skating at the Diamond Roller Rink when on leave. There he met Leona and she would write to him. Leona was a real morale booster. I only learned of Leona after Jim and I were married. By that time, she had stopped going roller skating and Jim lost touch with her, but her name was always in his little black book!. I did manage to keep track of Leona during these last years through Dolly Dilla Sherred. I did let Dolly know about Leona today. Pearl Grimm Altenhof

I have so many wonderful & happy memories of Aunt Oni. My favorite ones were all of the great Memorial Day Family Parties she had. And, so many delicious Thanksgiving Dinners that our families enjoyed together. What a wonderful cook Oni was ! ! And, the dearest, sweetest lady in the world.
