Obituary For Lucille "Lucy" Dallas

We regret to inform that Lucille “Lucy” Vera (née With) Dallas, age 101, died in the early morning on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

Lucy was born Aug. 26, 1923, to James and Elizabeth “Betty” (née Nelsen) With, the eldest daughter and second of five siblings. Born and raised in Denver, CO, Lucy overcame significant hardships and privation during the Great Depression and moved east at 18 years old, first to Washington, DC, and then to Philadelphia, PA, to aid in the administrative efforts of World War II. In Philadelphia she met and married her husband of 41 years, Rev. Albert Dallas (né Abdallah). Together they moved to Pittsburgh, PA, in 1945, where they remained for the rest of their natural lives. Lucy is preceded in death by her husband, sons William “Bill” Dallas and Terry Dallas, brother Alvin (Roberta) With, sisters Helen (Charles) Hiatt, Shirley (Bob) Hutchinson, Betty Jean (Robert) Erwin, and son-in-law Robert (Marlene) Gibson. She is survived by her daughter Marlene, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many other relations.

In 1964, following the tragic death of her son Terry from childhood leukemia at age 11, Lucy decided to become a nurse, as she had found great comfort in the work of the nurses she met and interacted with during his nine year illness. She completed her LPN training in 1965 and worked at the South Side Community Hospital, becoming a RN in 1971, until she retired in 1983 to care for her ailing husband.

Bring the outside in! Lucy was an avid gardener for the past eight decades and she surrounded herself with plants, both indoors and in the many garden beds she cultivated around her home. She has been an active member of the Whitehall Green Thumbers Garden Club since the early 1980s and continued to give talks from memory on fauna and flora of the garden through her 100th year. She has also been a long-time member of the Brentwood Presbyterian Church. When asked for her advice on a long life, she unhesitatingly recommended being grateful for the many blessings in life, maintaining connections with others, and surrounding oneself with younger friends. Lucy will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Friday, May 2, 2025 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. where funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 1:00 p.m.

Mrs Dallas taught me that you are never too old to do what is important.. I was impressed as a 17 year old that a woman in her 40's chose to start a career as a registered nurse when I was just starting mine. 55 years later I am still nursing. Thank you Mrs. D. "Bingy"

Aunt Lucille was always a joy to talk with on the phone. Her mind was so sharp and she always shared her knowledge so willingly. I will miss our conversations and the love we shared.

Met Lucille when I moved across the street in 2005. You told me about the flowers in my yard which she had helped the original owner plant. She also helped another neighbor put in a pond.. wonderful neighbor. Will be missed. She's in God's hands now, and will be Tenzing to all the garden in hwaven.

I remember Lucille asking me to help her with her computer and other electronics when Suzanne and I were members at Brentwood Presbyterian. She was always in the garden during the summer, and in the winter we'd drive over and she be finishing shoveling out the snow. We never got the chance to offer to do it for her. She was an amazing woman, and a loving Christian. Neil & Suzanne Zampella
