June 4, 1931 - August 21, 2015 Backinger Marie (Carey Courtney) Marie, age 84, went to be with our Lord on August 21, 2015. Family was by her side as she began another journey. Marie is pre-deceased by her parents, Stephen and Marie Carey, siblings Francis Carey and Kathleen Waters, and her former husband and great friend William Courtney. Marie is greatly missed by her adoring and devoted husband George, her youngest brother Stephen, her beloved children Kelly Werley (Brad), William III (Julie), and Timothy Courtney and her grandchildren, who were the joys of her life, Carey and Brendan Werley and Christina and William IV Courtney, 6 step-children and 5 step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Marie was very involved in St. Anne Parish in Castle Shannon as a Christian Mothers, PTG and choir member. She was also an Eucharistic minister at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Aurora, Ohio where she lived for the past 30 years while maintaining part-time residence in Mt. Lebanon and Castle Shannon. Marie loved to travel, starting as a young lady she moved to Florida and California. After returning to Pittsburgh, she worked at Bell Telephone and married Bill who built the Courtney home in Mt. Lebanon in 1955. There Marie enjoyed decorating, gardening, entertaining her children, socializing with friends and keeping in touch with family. Together Marie and Bill raised three children and enjoyed vacations at Geneva on the Lake, Ohio. Years later, Marie became an employee of TWA and United Airlines. Her desire to travel was renewed. She visited cities and towns the world over with family and friends. After Bill and Marie separated, she later met her second husband, George, at a Mt. Lebanon High School Reunion. They were married in 1983, and moved to Aurora, Ohio. Both Marie and George were active in many Walden committees and social clubs. They continued to travel, made "Camp Walden" a happy and joy-filled place for their grandchildren and a welcoming retreat for all family and friends. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, PA 15227, on Tuesday from 2-8 pm. Funeral Prayer on Wednesday morning at 10.
