June 6, 1928 - June 8, 2017 Ruta, Mario A. Age 89, passed away on June 8, 2017. A long term resident of the City of Pittsburgh, he was the husband of Evelyn (Gartside); father of Mari Lynn Murphy ( Patrick), Debra Jean Yasko ( Glenn), Scott Anderson (Donna) and Ami Ruta; grandfather of Nikki, Jaime, Anthony, Matthew, Breanna, Trevor and Alexis. He loved seeing the next generation which included great-grandchildren Braelynn, Mason, Zackary and Keegan. He was the son of the late Samuel and Eleanora Ruta, brother of the late Josephine Kulak, and is survived by sisters Rubina, Eleanor, Teresa, Anna and brother Samuel. Mario arrived from Avellino Italy, having come over on the America to start a new life in his new country at the age of three. He served in the Korean War in the Air Force attaining the rank of Sergeant. Upon returning from the war he worked at Allis Chalmers, Union Switch and Signal, and finally Crucible Steel, but claiming that the conditions of the job "were just too hot" he decided to become a firefighter. He joined the Pittsburgh Fire Bureau and eventually earned the rank of Captain. He retired in 1994 and was always proud of being a Pittsburgh Firefighter. He will be missed by all. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, on Sunday and Monday from 4-8 p.m. Funeral Prayer on Tuesday morning at 9.
