Obituary For Mary Ann (Froehlich) Moore

Mary Ann Moore (nee Froehlich) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, in her home in Allison Park, PA. Mary Ann was born July 17, 1946 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Milton and Merna Froehlich (nee Mary). She was raised in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, attending St. Gabriel's Elementary and St. Elizabeth High School class of 1964. Mary Ann graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Francis Hospital 25 years. She enjoyed her many years working in the pediatric unit. Mary Ann was a member of SW PA RN Club for over 40 years. She had served as a past president of the club as well as the chairperson for the Nightingale Tribute. She is survived by her daughters Darlene (Tim) Grieco of Cranberry Township, PA and Pamela (Tony) Spalvieri of Seven Fields, PA. She was known as Grammie to her nine beloved grandchildren; Precious, Kierian, Joseph, Jameson, Makeda, Anna, Anthony, Abigail and Andrew. She is also survived by her three brothers, George (Sue) Froehlich, Jim Froehlich Ofm Cap and Larry (Carol) Froehlich and her three sisters, Jeanne Graff, Clare Walk and Carole Succop, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Ann will be remembered by her family and friends as someone with a zest for life, a "conversationalist" and her love of shopping. When asked how she wanted to be remembered, she responded, "comical, stubborn, warm hearted, caring and giving". She will be dearly missed. Family will welcome friends on Sunday, November 27, from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, 4201 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227, 412-881-4100. Funeral Prayer on Monday morning at 10:45 am. Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Hope Parish, St. Gabriel of The Sorrowful Virgin Church at 11:30 am.

    To say Mary Ann was unique is an understatement. I can't think of her without smiling. Looking back I realize we had many things in common. Our homes were on the same street, Flamingo Drive. We walked through the same high school corridors, St. Elizabeth's in Pleasant hills. Our Mothers, Merna and Nona, both graduated from St. George's High School in 1930 something. They, and six other classmates, had the longest running 500 bid card game in modern history. It lasted for decades. Mary Ann and I could recall all of their names: Dolly, Mary Lou, Rose, Anna and Kay (who replaced Claire upon her death). Yet, of all the things Mary Ann and I shared, the basketball court at St Elizabeth's High School holds the most memorable moments. I was a year or two older but when joining the team we quickly dubbed her, "Fragile Froehlich" It had nothing to do with her temerity or daintiness. Quite the contrary. When she stepped on the court her 5 foot frame was transformed and she went after her much taller opponents like a raving rotweiler. It was a time of great laughter, camaraderie and learning how to win and lose. Many years later I was out shopping for a raincoat. Mary Ann appeared our of nowhere at the coat rack. Though I hadn't seen her for awhile, she voluntarily proceeded to help with my search. Before long she had befriended the saleswoman and persuaded me to buy not one but three raincoats. I kept telling her I only needed one but she persisted. "They are such a steal you can't pass them up". What should have taken me one hour tops, took three hours. I returned home with three raincoats. That was Mary Ann. Never pass up a bargain. I know her final years proved challenging but that spirit of kindness and caring and the ability to laugh never wavered. She was one of a kind. I will miss her loving spirit (but not the three raincoats). Mary Ellen Burger Staab
