Obituary For Mary Jane Haid

Age 95, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, in the presence of loved ones at her longtime Brentwood home. Raised as one of eight siblings, she was born on November 2, 1929, in the Mount Washington neighborhood, a place she reminisced about often. Along with her late husband, Sylvester, Mary Jane built a family of her own, having four children - Sylvester Haid Jr., Diane (Norman) Kilbert, Judy (Kevin) Conley, and Sharon (Michael) Benedik. She was also the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Known as a tremendous cook, her home was often full of the hearty smells of chicken noodle soup, stuffed peppers, or potato pancakes. Mary Jane loved to entertain company, and her house was always a destination for holidays together. The sound of a Steelers broadcast or some Family Feud reruns could be heard in the background as a game of spades broke out on her dining room table. Her quick wit and often brazen style of humor made her a main attraction anywhere she was. She was a great gift giver, a lover of cherry ice cream, and a master of “shootin’ the shit.” Mary Jane leaves behind a tremendous void; her guiding voice served as the path for several generations of family. She loved unconditionally and was the quiet strength that held everything together. Her door was open to all, and the coffee pot was always full. She would lend an ear to any troubled soul and meet them with worthy advice. If her motherly presence couldn’t make you feel at home, a slice of her poppy seed cake surely would. Mary Jane Haid was a magnificent sister, wife, mother, and friend; nobody is perfect, but she’s as close as one could get.

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Friday, June 6, 2025 from 2-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Saturday morning at 9:00. Mass of Christian Burial in Mary Queen of Peace Parish, St. Mary of the Mount Church at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
