Obituary For Mary L. Cronauer

March 13, 1921 - October 22, 2017

Cronauer, Mary L. (Semo) Age 96, formerly of Whitehall, died on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Paramount Senior Living Center in McMurray, PA.

She was born on March 13, 1921 in Portage, PA, to John and Mary Semo who emigrated from Czechoslovakia to America in the early 20th century. Mary graduated from Portage Township High School in 1940, attended Mt. Aloysius College in Cresson, PA, and worked as a secretary at the Pentagon during World War II. She married Charles E. Cronauer, Jr. on April 11, 1944 in Tampa, FL immediately prior to "Charlie" being sent overseas as a bombardier navigator, flying 35 missions over Western Europe and Germany on a B-17 Flying Fortress in World War II. Mary and Charlie pursued a 30 year career at U.S. Steel, living in State College, PA, Crafton, PA, Pittsburgh, PA, Girard, OH, Cleveland, OH, Rocky River, OH, Arlington Height, IL, eventually settling in Whitehall, PA. Mary and Charlie loved to travel and entertain friends, business associates, and family. Mary enjoyed cooking, gardening, playing bridge, and golf. Mary was very generous. She shared her home with her children and grandchildren on numerous occasions throughout the years and often provided significant financial support to her children. Mary always went above and beyond in making meals for the holidays and family get togethers. She was a longtime member of St. Elizabeth Parish in Whitehall, PA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Cronauer, Jr. (January 24, 1998), by her sisters Ann (Jack) Robertson, Margaret (Steve) Bilo, and Helen (Bill) Walsh; by her brothers Michael (Gloria) Semo, John Semo, and Peter (Carol) Semo; and by her granddaughter Carley Cronauer. She is survived by her children Charles E. (Julie) Cronauer III of DeKalb, IL, Marianne "Mikki" (James) Cunningham of Lawrence, PA, Richard J. Cronauer of Jefferson Hills, PA, and Cynthia M. Vactor of Whitehall, PA; grandchildren Heather (Matt) Ferri, Michael Mullins, Christopher Vactor, Charles E. (Emily) Cronauer, IV, James J. (Alissa) Cronauer, C. Nicholas (Audra) Cronauer, R. Alexander Cronauer, Garret Cronauer, and Kelly Cronauer; great-grandchildren Matteo Ferri, Meadow Ferri, Annie Cronauer, Caitlynn Cronauer, Elizabeth Cronauer, L. Cadence Cronauer, Aidan J. Cronauer and Noah C. Cronauer; sisters-in-law Patricia Rocker and Marion Cronauer; and many, many nieces and nephews. There will be no public visitation. Arrangements made by John F. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Alz.org or your favorite charity in Mary's name.
