Austin (Lane), Maureen

Age 89, of Bethel Park, died November 6, 2017. Beloved wife of 63 years to the late Lloyd Austin; dear mother of John, Mary Ann (Dick Davis), and Lloyd (Paula); devoted grandmother of Laura (Salvatore Desiano), Richard (Stephanie), Benjamin, Matthew (Emily), Jade (Peter Mersing), Kimberly (Scott Shoemaker), and Nate; and loving great-grandmother to Matthew, Austin, Michelangelo, Cassidy, and Hunter. The only child of Mark and Mary Lane, Maureen developed a lifelong love of music while traveling the mid-Atlantic region with her father, a big band musician. Maureen grew up in the South Hills and graduated from South Hills High School in 1947, and she and Lloyd married that same year. A founding and active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park, she also worked as Youth Director for many years at Brentwood Presbyterian Church. She also dutifully served on the Pennsylvania Grand Jury in Harrisburg for two years. Maureen was a lively part of her community, a renowned hostess and cook, and creative home decorator. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends. Friends and relatives will be received at John F. Slater Funeral Home, 4201 Brownsville Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15227, Wednesday, November 8, from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Memorial Service will be held at Christ United Methodist on Friday at 11 a.m. PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Saint Clair Hospital Memorial Fund., 1000 Bower Hill Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15243.

    I remember Maureen from her time as Christian Ed. Director at Brentwood Presbyterian Church. She was so full of enthusiasm. She was a great encourager of everyone...children, youth, and adults...bringing out the best qualities in each. I remember teaching Sunday School, attending Synod School, clown ministry, youth services, lots of long conversations, and Maureenâ??s infectious laugh! She was a gem, and made such an impact on the youth at BPC! Praying for Maureenâ??s family as you trust in the resurrection promises of Jesus! Blessings in Jesus! Rev. Alice Phillips

    I had the pleasure of working with Maureen in the 1970s at Christ Church. We had a clown troop of youth that visited hospitals in the Pittsburgh area. She was a great friend and very devoted to her family and church. This past Sunday was the celebration of All-Saints Day in many churches. She was one of the greatest. Thank you Maureen for being you and sharing your life with so many.
