Mel and I were first cousins, the first grandchildren born to our Grandmother Mary at the family home in Bedford and we were born on the same day and same year. Mel was like a brother to me in many ways and I always looked forward to the summer when we were kids and our families got together for a week at the Bedford farm. I will miss Mel and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to his wife Lauren as well as his extended family in Pittsburgh PA.

Mel was a beloved cousin when we were growing up. He was always charming, talkative, and funny. My brothers, Robert, Billy, John, and I always looked forward to seeing him in the summer months and holidays we spent together in Bedford. He could tell the wildest stories about the most mundane things. If Melvin was in the room, he was sure to have an audience surrounding him. He had a way of making everyone feel special. It is so sad that family members lose contact through the years and the miles that separate them. I will always cherish the childhood memories we shared growing up on Grandma's farm in VA.
