Obituary For Michael Nathan Task

Passed away in his home in Vernon, CT on Friday, September 18, 2020. Mike was a devoted and loving son to his parents Karen Task and the late Allen Task. He was a true friend to his brother Keith and a kind owner to his dog, Dexter; grandson of the late Thomas and Lydia Porter and Louis and Fay Task. Mike is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Mike was a Pittsburgh native, and graduated from Baldwin High School in 2003. He then earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh in Materials Engineering. Because of his love of Pitt and Materials Science, he continued his education and earned his PhD in the same field. Directly after graduating he joined Pratt and Whitney and has been there for the past eight years in various roles, including Senior Materials Engineer and Discipline Chief. Mike also had various hobbies, some of which were photography, beer brewing, camping and hiking. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Friday, September 25, 2020 from 4-8 p.m. Due to the current public health crisis, masks and social distancing guidelines must be adhered to. Funeral services and interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to the Animal Welfare Institute (awionline.org).

Mike was a great young man and wonderful friend & colleague. He and I met during his first days at P&W. Mike was always in a great mood with a gentle smile, so I and others made frequent stops at his desk over the years. He had the desk closest to the main hallway for a while, which provided ample opportunity to check in with him. We worked in the same group for some time and Mike was a great mentor like others have mentioned. He always provided great perspective and advice on materials questions, career advice, or local breweries. His own creations were excellent, too! It's an unbelievable loss when we lose one of our best buds, but we are all honored to have met Mike along the way. Please rest easy, Mike. We all miss you and we will not forget your many contributions to our lives. My sincerest condolences to his friends and family.

I offer my sincere condolences on the passing of Mike. I first met Mike at the Gordon Conference on High-temperature Corrosion when he was a graduate student. I remember trying to keep up with Mike hiking up Mount Kearsarge. I was very glad when Mike decided to join Pratt & Whitney. He made a significant contribution over the years and was a friend and mentor to all. It was great working alongside Mike. Mike will be greatly missed.

I consider myself blessed to have called Mike a friend he truly was a special person. A brilliant yet practical engineer, a fellow lover of espresso and good beer, and someone who loved getting out and experiencing nature and the world. He had a knack for bringing people together, yet at the same time being present and letting you know that you were important. On many occasions he helped me out with things both at work and in life, from the mundane to the challenging always with a smile and calm demeanor. I will never forget Mike and his positive impact on both myself and everyone else he touched in his too short life. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Mike was one of the kindest, generous, and caring people I've ever known and had such a great sense of humor. Mike was always lending his help in any way he could, before I could even ask for it. Mike moved into my cubicle shortly after I started at Pratt & Whitney, and we became fast friends. Soon Kaylan (our other cubemate) and I were joking that we were the little sisters Mike was stuck with, always pestering him, but with love. Mike, in kind, played the big brother, making sure we went to the doctor when we were sick and got home alright from a brewery. I am deeply saddened Mike is no longer with us and I will never forget the kind, generous spirit that he had; I'll hold that with me always. My sincerest condolences to Mike's family during this tough time.

We are so sad to hear about Mike's passing. As new engineers joining Pratt, Mike was so welcoming, approachable, and inclusive to us. He was a pleasure to work with but even more to spend time with. Mike would host summer barbeques where all friends and family of all ages and backgrounds, including those with four legs, were welcome at his home. We enjoyed sharing craft beer with him and exchanging stories about our rescue dogs. Mike will be missed by the Pratt & Whitney community for his knowledge and mentorship but even moreso for the kindness he showed to everyone. With sincere condolences, Nate Martel & Danielle Haley

Mike was like an older brother to me - I came to him with all of my problems, both work-related and personal, and he always had the perfect answer or a joke to make it better. He was one of the kindest people I've ever known, with such a big heart and endless compassion. I miss him very much, and suspect I always will. Rest in peace, Mike. To his family, please know how much he was loved.

I have known Mike since graduate school, he was at Pitt and I was at Penn State. He was one of the first people I engaged with technically and I quickly realized his depth of knowledge. It is an understatement to say Mike knew everything, absolutely everything about everything. He mentored me during graduate school but I did not realize we would cross paths again at Pratt & Whitney several years later where he continued to mentor me. I am not sure I would be where I am today without his help and guidance. Mike was not only a teacher, but also a great person and a lover of animals. When we adopted our first dog, who has anxiety, Mike was willing to take the plunge to meet him and show to us how loving an animal at first glance could really bring out the best in everyone. We will never forget that. I cannot begin to describe to the world what a loss this is. The high temperature corrosion community has lost one of its most talented individuals. Mike had so many ideas about how to better understand the problems and come up with novel solutions. He was a chef in many ways, always cooking up very interesting concoctions both in and out of work (I think he used his talent in the kitchen quite a bit at work to come up with some of these out of the box ideas, just with less pulled pork involved). Mike, we will miss you. I want to apologize for the differences we had the last couple of years and how our friendship dissolved. I wish I could go back in time to change that. Rest in Peace.

We would like to express our deepest sympathy for the loss of your Michael. The loss of a son and a brother is so hard to understand. Only god knows why. He will be with you every minute of every day. Remember the good times and cherish the life that he shared with the world. Often when we think of Johnathan we think of Troy and Matthew and others that have left us too soon. Now we will think of Michael also. Our prayers are with you. We are very sorry but we will not be able to be there in person as we are traveling. Please accept our condolences via this note. Peace and God Bless, John and Donna College

I was truly saddened to hear of Mike's passing. As his first supervisor when he started at Pratt & Whitney I was supposed to mentor Mike on various topics, but right away it was clear that I was going to learn a great deal from him. He quickly gained a reputation as a Go-To individual for many technical challenges and many senior engineers sought him out for his guidance. More importantly, he was a terrific person. He was always ready to help, whenever you asked. I consider myself very fortunate to have known Mike. My thoughts and prayers are with all his family and friends. While his time with us all was too short, I hope it can bring a smile to you to know that his life made such a positive impact on so many people.

Love isn't a big enough word To describe about how I feel about Mike. He was the best of us. Beyond his brilliance at work, he was so present for his friends and family. Like others have said, he had a knack for getting friends together. Makes sense...he was our shining light. I hope to continue being there for people in my life on a level even half as meaningful and inspiring as he was in his shortened lifetime.. I love you buddy, and I'll deeply cherish all the wonderful memories we shared, and the impact you have made on me. Rest In Peace my sweet friend .

I have known Mike for many years, working with him on many Pratt&Whitney Canada projects. He was a knowledgeable and brilliant engineer, capable of explaining and discussing complex concepts in simple words. On a human level, Mike was such an affable, honest and empathetic person. I will miss him much, he left us way too soon. My sympathy to his family and all of those who loved Mike, as a friend, a collegue, or both.

  • September 24, 2020

I met Mike on his first day of work at Pratt & Whitney as we shared a cubicle together at work. Mike was a great guy that I will never forget. At work he was the expert on corrosion issues but also had a very caring side. Mike volunteered to help run the PW-Great Northern Coffee Club and also volunteered his time to buy gifts for less fortunate families at Christmas time. I'm sorry for your loss. Mike will be greatly missed.

Mike was a mentor and friend to myself and many others at P&W. I learned a lot from him over the past few years. He not only taught me a lot technically, but also provided advice and guidance that gave me confidence as a young engineer and adult. He was brilliant, respectful, gracious, generous, humble, and had an excellent sense of humor. I always admired his ability to get friends together for social gatherings. His influence and positive impact on those that knew him will continue to shine. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and all who loved Mike.

I was very happy when Mike joined Pratt as a corrosion expert and was glad to pass on some of the challenging tasks to the expert. It was a pleasure working with Mike and was a great asset for Pratt. It is shocking to think that he is no more with him so much promise and potential is lost. My prayers are with the family and loved ones and may his soul rest in eternal peace. -Dilip Shah

I know Mike only from his time here at Pratt, where he showed himself daily to be one of the most considerate people I have met. I know that sounds like a big boast, but I can say it with confidence. Mike treated all members of the Pratt family with respect and dignity. Truly a text book example of what is good in mankind.
