Obituary For Nancy Ann (Talvick) Balta

Age 90, of Whitehall Borough, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

Beloved wife of the late Louis Balta. Loving mother of William Balta of Whitehall Borough; Wayne (wife Maritza) Balta of Upper St. Clair; and Luann (husband James) Davis of Bethel Park. Dear grandmother of Juliana and Christopher Balta and Lindsey and Alexa Davis.

Nancy enjoyed a long life filled with many happy occasions. She was born in McKeesport, PA, in 1934 as the only child to Samuel and Anna (Musulin) Tatalovich, both of whom were the children of Serbian immigrants from Eastern Europe who had settled in McKeesport at the turn of the century. A 1952 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School, Nancy married Louis Balta of Clairton, PA, in 1954 and enjoyed 56 years of marriage through Lou’s passing in 2011.

Growing up, Nancy enjoyed close relationships with her paternal Aunt Anne Tatalovich and Uncle Walter Tatalovich along with several cousins from the Musulin branch of Nancy’s family, including Natalie Kovac, Billie Jean Schuller, and Marlene Hetrick who survive Nancy and with whom Nancy only grew closer over the years. During marriage, Nancy enjoyed family time, Serbian events, and holidays with Lou’s late sisters Ann (Balta) Kukich and Mary (Balta) Musulin and their families. Among many life experiences, some of Nancy’s greatest joys were summer vacations during the 1970s in Miami Beach with Lou, the kids, and her Aunt Anne and Uncle Walt; her kids’ graduations from college; subsequent vacations to places like Maui and Aruba with the additions to her family of Maritza (Balta) and Jim (Davis) and her grandchildren; and holiday celebrations at her home in Whitehall with her entire expanded family.

Above all, Nancy was a devoted homemaker who raised three children while Lou worked during the day as a teacher and administrator at Clairton High School and during the night as manager of the South Park Drive-In Theater from the 1950s to the early 1980s. What defined Nancy was her enduring strength and selfless dedication to her family, for which her children have been so very blessed and are forever grateful.

Nancy will be dearly missed. Visitation on Friday, May 9 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and from 6:00pm to 8:00pm with a pomen service at 7:00pm at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood and Saturday, May 10, from 10:00am-11:00am at Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Cathedral where the funeral service will be held at 11:00am. EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT THE CHURCH. Interment at Saint Sava Cemetery in Bethel Park. Please send condolences to www.johnfslater.com

One of my earliest memories of Nancy was when she was approximately 19-years-old and I was 10. She was single at the time and was sitting on a sofa in the living room of her family home at 66 Rocklyn Place and strumming a guitar and singing for us. Can't remember the song; no special occasion......just a family visit. I wonder if Nancy ever continued those talents! Her wedding to Lou also remains in my memory. Nancy looked beautiful, as did her bridesmaids in their light blue gowns. The tamburitzans serenaded her outside of the Serbian church in Clairton. It was a glorious day. Peace be with you, Dear Cousin. From: Billie Jean Schuller
