Obituary For Phyllis M. (Burke) Barber

Age 90, passed peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, of West Mifflin, formerly of Hazelwood.

Beloved wife of 54 years to Simon A. Barber; loving mom of Phyllis Barber and Simone Vecchio; cherished sister of Charlotte (Tom) Flanagan and the late Shirley (Gene) Wagner, Joseph Burke, Robert Burke, Richard Burke, Eugene Burke and sister-in-law, Marie (Don) LoCascio. Also loved and missed by many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Phyllis grew up in Hazelwood, a place she fondly remembered throughout her life. She met her husband, Simon, at the B&O Railroad, where both later retired.

A long-time parishioner of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Phyllis fiercely loved her daughters and her family. She was a constant source of strength, advice, comfort, knowledge, and humor.

Phyllis came from a large, close-knit family. For most of her adult life, she lived just two doors away from her sister Charlotte and only minutes from her sister Shirley. Phyllis, Shirley, and Charlotte were inseparable. Their children along with other nieces and nephews, grew up together-more like siblings than cousins-and holidays were especially memorable.

In later years, she and Simon lived within walking distance of their two daughters in Crafton.

Phyllis had a sharp sense of humor and remained sassy until her final days. She enjoyed watching Jimmy Kimmel Live, Saturday Night Live, and Notre Dame football. One of her greatest joys was socializing with family and friends, whether over the phone or in person, often accompanied by a good meal. Phyllis was fortunate to celebrate her 90th birthday in style with a special lunch at one of her favorite places.

Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Friday, December 12, 2025 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Saturday morning at 9:00. Mass of Christian Burial in Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish, St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bright Kids Uganda https://brightkidsuganda.org/ or Hello Neighbor https://www.helloneighbor.io/
