August 14, 1928 - September 7, 2014 Bower, Richard C. "Dick", age 86, on September 7, 2014 of Baldwin. Beloved son of the late Paul R. and Enid D. Bower; loving husband of 63 years to Rosetta B. (Baker); loving father of James R. (Amy), John C. (Sue), Daniel E. (Kathy); proud grandfather of Chelsey, Amanda, Caitlin and Michael, and his 3 grand-dogs; brother of the late Enid B. Sanders and Paul R. Bower, Jr. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Dick was a graduate of Baldwin High School, Slippery Rock University and the University of Pittsburgh, and served in the US Army during the Korean War. He taught Physical Education at Whitehall Jr. High for 32 years and was known for his "fun day" obstacle courses, coached track and football and started the Whitehall Jr. Invitational Track meet, which inspired the Baldwin Invitational. Dick enjoyed his long retirement, traveled, spent time with his grandkids, and served as an airport Ambassador. He also volunteered at Jefferson Hospital and received the President's Volunteer Service Award in 2014, having given 4,000 hours. Friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Wednesday from 6-8 and Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. where funeral services will be held on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. If desired, please make a donation to the charity of your choice in Dick's name.
