Obituary For Robert "Bob" Michael Sable, Sr.

Robert “Bob” Michael Sable, Sr., age 98, of Baldwin Borough, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 20, 2025, after a lengthy illness.

Bob was a graduate of Homestead High School. He dedicated 39 years to U.S. Steel Homestead Works, working there until the plant’s closure in 1986. Deeply involved in his community, Bob began his political career as a borough auditor and party committee member. In 1980, he was elected to Baldwin Borough Council, where he served for many years and became President of Council.

From 1990 until his retirement at age 70, Bob served as District Magistrate for the boroughs of Baldwin and Brentwood, a role he found greatly rewarding.

A proud veteran, Bob served his country during both World War II and the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley “Boots” (Weber) Sable; his son, Robert Michael (survived by Suzanne)Sable Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Lee Sable; his siblings, Kathleen, Thomas, Donald, James, and Joseph “Jerry;” and his parents, Joseph and Agnes (Finnegan) Sable.

He is survived by three loving children: John “Jack” Joseph Sable, Cheryl Ann Sudor, and Edward Steven (Meagan) Sable. Bob was the cherished grandfather of Samantha Livingston; Lauren Renee Sudor (Brian); Paige Elizabeth Sable (Isaac) Baker; Robert “Bobby” Michael (Alison) Sable III; and Matthew Alan Sable. He was the proud great-grandfather of Tyler Gregory Hughes, Marley Renee Hughes, and Caleb James Sable Baker, and he was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his fourth great-grandchild, Robert Michael Sable IV, due in July. Bob is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Bob was Catholic by faith and a longtime member of St. Wendelin Church. After its closure, he remained a supporter of Blessed Trinity Parish.

Family and friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, 4201 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227 on Thursday, April 24, 2025 from 3-8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Friday morning at the funeral home at 9:30. Mass of Christian Burial in Blessed Trinity Parish, St. Albert the Great Church, 3198 Schieck St, Pittsburgh, PA 15227 at 10:30 a.m.

    98 years of life stories filled with memories of love, family, prayer, work, rituals, good times and also losses. Bob was generous and giving perhaps unyielding at times yet always loved and loving. He will be missed. Hope grows through his family. With great respect for the many virtues he truly displayed in our midst, we send love to his family.
