Buchanan, Sally Lou (Faley)

88, of Whitehall, died January 22, 2014 in Nashville, TN.

Born on November 26, 1925 in Pittsburgh. She was the daughter of the late Gerald J. Faley and Ann McCann Faley Rees. She attended St. Bernard Grade School, Mt. Lebanon High School and received her RN at Mercy School of Nursing. Mrs. Buchanan received numerous awards and accolades for her civic and charitable contributions. She was a nurse and later a volunteer in the ER at Mercy Hospital for more than 50 years. She held positions on the boards of several local organizations including the Pittsburgh Opera Association and The Allegheny County Medical Society. Her charitable endeavors included 3 summers, with her husband Dr. James L.Buchanan, MD in the Franciscan T.O.R. Missions in Brazil and later helped form a continuing education program for Brazilian doctors in conjunction with Mercy. She was also an EMT with the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Company and was honored by Whitehall Borough with Sally Buchanan Day in 2003. Sally was preceded in death by Dr. Buchanan and a son, Gerald P. Buchanan. She is survived by son James L. Buchanan, Jr. of Oak Hill, VA; daughters Sally Ann Buchanan of Nashville, TN; and Mari Beth Meals of Pittsburgh; 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 8, 10am at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Roman Catholic Church, Whitehall. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Hazelwood. The family suggests memorial contributions to Pittsburgh Mercy Health System, Operation Safety Net, 101 Bradford Road, Suite 320, Wexford, PA 15090. Arrangements entrusted to the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Rd., Brentwood.
