Obituary For Shirley May (Losco) Shaffer

Of Baldwin, died four days short of her 86th birthday, on Thursday, February 9, 2023.

Shirley was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by son Randy (Sue) Shaffer of Pleasant Hills, grandson Jonathon (Nicole) Shaffer of Jefferson Hills and great-grandson Nico.

Born Shirley May Losco on February 13, 1937, she grew up in Economy, Beaver County, one of a family of eight children. She was surrounded by chickens, goats, a horse and other farm animals throughout her childhood. Her home was on a road named after the ancestors of her husband of 52 years, Charles Shaffer, who passed in 2012.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Alberta, who came to this country from northern Italy in the waning years of the surge of European immigration a century ago.

Many people in Pittsburgh's South Hills may remember Shirley as the lottery clerk at Herbert's Pharmacy in Caste Village, where she worked until the establishment went out of business in the 1980's, and as a rental agent for Prospect Park Apartments in Whitehall.

Shirley followed current events and politics quite intently during her lifetime, enjoyed long telephone conversations with family and friends, and made sure to tune her television set to "Wheel of Fortune" each evening that she was home.

There will be no visitation. Interment will be in Rehoboth Lutheran Cemetery in Economy. Arrangements were handled by the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227.
