Obituary For Steven G. Young

Peacefully, at the age of 74, Steven George Young has entered eternal life. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joette Cooper Young and their daughters Tereleigh (Scott) Fabean and Amanda (Wakanwa) Nzambi along with his beloved grandchildren, Grace (Matilda) Fabean, Cooper (Miranda) Fabean, Marko Fabean, Maryn Fabean, London Nzambi, Noelle Nzambi, and Lillian Nzambi.

Born to Dorothy and Harry Young of Whitehall, Steve is preceded in death by his siblings Michael (Sandy) Young and Thomas (Karla) Young, and survived by Constance (Ken) Greb, Christopher (Lois) Young, Betsy (Sylvester) Kubacki, Paul Young and by many nieces and nephews.

Steve was faithful and was guided by one of his favorite quotes, “We are not human beings having spiritual experiences, but spiritual beings having human experiences.” He treasured his time at St. Annes parish and being a part of the choir there.

Steve was an athlete who excelled in basketball playing for Gannon University and lettering all four years. He was also fond of golf and was a devoted fan of the Pirates.

Steve and his wife began Young Restoration Company over 40 years ago. He always spoke so lovingly of the men who worked with him and they all touched his life exceedingly. Wherever Steve went, throughout his life, he was a force and made such powerful relationships.

The family will receive friends and family at Mt. Lebanon Recreation Department, 900 Cedar Blvd., Room A, Pittsburgh, PA 15228 on Saturday, December 7, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM after which will follow a short prayer service. Arrangements handled by the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that a contribution be made to the Crossroads Foundation at www.crossroadsfoundation.org at 6901 Lynn Way, Pittsburgh PA 15208 to support the lives of its young scholars.

My deepest sympathy to the Young family and loved ones. I met Steve and Joette at LHP years ago and always happy to see them. Steve was always a delight and admired by many, especially me. When he saw me, he would yell out Joanie baby ....... He was kind, generous and everything you could imagine in a gentleman. I was the lucky one to have known him. Steve will be missed, such a vibrant soul and truly unforgettable man.

Steve and Joette were among our first friends when we moved back to Pittsburgh in 1984. They welcomed us into the neighborhood, their lives, and their hearts. There are not enough words to describe how much both of them mean to us and our family, or how greatly we will miss Steve - a kind, talented, funny, loving, deeply spiritual man - and a heck of a basketball player. We send our love and prayers to all his dear family at this sad time. Still, we know that we will continue to see Steve in the faces and personalities of his children and grandchildren, and in the love of his beautiful wife, Joette. Put in a good word for all of us in heaven, Steve, for that is most surely where you are! - Mary & Dean Calland

I send my deepest sympathy to the Young family. Steve was nine when I was born. I did not know him beyond understanding he was an admired older brother of Chris, Betsy, and Paul. I carry precious memories of the fun loving Young family. Our parents were the best of friends and I remember spending a lot of time at their house, our second home. I remember warm generous hugs from Dorothy and scooting around larger than life Harry who was lounging on the front patio. Dance lessons with Connie in the basement, chocolate chip cookie baking in the kitchen and singing with Betsy and my sisters in one of the upstairs bedrooms are idyllic memories. The best family vacations were with the Young's! Days spent at the Wildwood Crest New Jersey shore were carefree and fun! Sand castle making on the beach, biking on the boardwalk and talent show singing are treasured memories. In recent years, I learned how much Steve loved my parents. He couldn't help but break COVID barriers to speak at my mother's funeral in 2020. It was obvious she held a significant place in his heart. Likewise I was deeply touched by the glowing meaning behind his reverent presence in front of my father at the funeral home. These memories will forever be with me. Amanda's beautiful tribute and Steve's singing reveal his lighthearted personality and the magical influence of his life, well lived, that has left an indelible mark on those he touched. Rest in peace dear Steve, rest in peace with the angels and loved ones who have gone before you.

Steve was an extended member of our big family via Joette, my cousin. We always enjoyed spending time together in Michigan when Steve and Joette traveled here to gather with family often cousins.. He was a delightful man who added his beautiful smile and sweet disposition and I'm grateful to have known Steve. My blessings and love to Joette, the girls, his grandchildren, family and friends. God be with all of you.

Bob and I are so very sorry for your loss. I often recall, and will always cherish, memories of our chats about the jazz, R&B and Rock "greats" of our time and his wonderful, offbeat sense of humor. His love of music and life were remarkable. There is a bright new star in the heavens and a booming, bold voice singing in an eternal choir. Luv and prayers to your family, Sandy & Bob Bibeault (LHC)

Steve was one towering guy. He was my friend Paul's big brother, and someone to look up to due basketball prowess and care for others. Like everyone in his family, Steve welcomed friendships, appreciated people deeply, and found reasons to laugh and celebrate the joys of life several moments of every day. To the Young family, thanks for all your love and sharing the sadness of your loss.

My sympathy to Joette and the Young family. In addition to growing up together on Greenridge Drive, Steve and I were classmates through the years and graduating class of '67 at Baldwin High School. Always enjoyed being in his company and lots of memories growing up. THE star player on the BHS basketball team ! Craig Schein Sewickley, PA

Steve and I graduated from Baldwin high school together. He was a good friend, always upbeat, a great basketball player, a stalwart in the choir and a better person. We crossed paths at high school reunions every five years and it was so good to see him. I have many fond memories of Steve. See you in Glory old friend. Tom Hammon BHS 1967
