Obituary For Teresa R. (Tess) Nowalk

On Holy Saturday, April 11, 2020, Teresa R. (Tess) Nowalk, age 91, of Whitehall Borough, suddenly but peacefully, left the loving care of her family and was delivered into the arms of the Lord. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Francis J. Nowalk, and children, Jim (Tricia) Nowalk, Bob (Jenny) Nowalk, Mary (Pat) Wood, Nancy (Scot) McKinnis, Sally (Ray) Helfer, and Beth (J.J.) Schmiedlin, 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Born and raised in Carrick, the daughter of Alphonse and Catherine Rectenwald, Tess leaves behind her sisters, Mary Jane Lazenga, Ruth Then, and Shirley Warner, but joins her sister Norma Piel and brother Jim Rectenwald, who preceded her in death. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Tom Nowalk and sister-in-law, Kathleen Till. Tess was blessed to have many wonderful nieces and nephews and a cadre of close friends. She was known for her religious devotion, bridge-playing, bowling prowess, and volunteering for South Hills Family Hospice. A limited viewing due to the health emergency will be followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. A Mass and celebration of Tess’s life will be scheduled at the conclusion of the health emergency. Arrangements entrusted to the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227. In lieu of flowers, Tess’s family asks that donations be made to St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church or its St. Vincent DePaul Society. The address for both organizations is: 5200 Greenridge Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15236.

My deepest condolences to the family of Mrs. Nowalk ( thats how we all addressed Jim's Mom). As we get older we forget alot of memories from our childhood, but my best childhood memories come from knowing the Nowalk family. They were my go to Family, Jim of course one of my best friends and his brother and all of his cute sisters. Then there was Mr. Nowalk who seemed to laugh at me alot because I was the Eddie Haskel (Leave it to Beaver) type who constantly came to the house for food. Then there was Mrs. Nowalk who always took care of my needs and the Buddies whenever we came and really by all definition was our second Mom. She cooked and listened and filled in when Jim would fall asleep while playing bridge. She always smiled and made us feel at home and gave me the most food of everyone. She was a model for all of us on how to treat friends of her children. I try to be like her even with my 13yr. old daughter and her friends except her food was better than mine. We live in a high tech world now, but sometimes I always go back to the memories of visiting the Nowalk Family and Mrs. Nowalk's kindness and love that is alot better then the facetime generation we live in now. I know you are now feeding the angels and making heaven a better place. Thank you for being you, Pat
