Obituary For Tim Landers

Landers, Tim, of Jefferson Hills, PA, born March 5, 1945, passed away quietly at Jefferson Hospital on Sunday, April 5, 2020 after a 3-year fight with cancer. Husband of 30 years to his beloved wife, Diane Beynon Landers; father of Matthew Landers of Jefferson Hills, Jennifer Landers (Neal) Stump of Atlanta, GA and survived by their mother Marsha Landers; loving grandfather of Zach and Sean Landers and Leighton and Brooke Stump; brother of Gail Landers Cordisco of California and uncle to her children, Larry and Todd Cordisco. Also survived by the Beynon family of Pittsburgh, including cherished nieces and nephews. After graduating from California University in 2 ½ years at the age of 20, Tim began his professional career teaching History and Civics at Connelley Vocational High School. He was able to establish a wonderful rapport with his students, many of whom were close to his own age. When Connelley closed, Tim was assigned to Peabody High School where he taught Scholars Sociology, International Relations, and Civics. During the tumultuous late 60’s after Dr. Martin Luther King’s death, when racial tensions were high, Tim was asked by a group of teachers, parents and administrators to take over as Activities Director in hopes that he could create a program to help bring students together. He was able to establish over 50 clubs, bringing together students of all races and creeds. After 12 years as Activities Director, he was asked to take over the CAS (Centers for Advanced Studies) Program for gifted students. During his tenure, CAS grew from 60 to 139 students and received several awards as one of the highest rated academic programs in the state. Tim also coached track and cross country and sponsored an archaeology club. He attributed much of his success in these endeavors to the outstanding Peabody faculty. Tim was an avid outdoorsman who loved fly fishing throughout Pennsylvania and the West, as well as sailing in the Bahamas and Virgin Islands. His love of history and antique collecting enriched the extensive travels he and Diane enjoyed throughout the world. His beautiful soul, love of laughter, and joyful embrace of life will be sorely missed by his loving family and many friends. Visitation is private. Burial will be in Jefferson United Methodist Church Episcopal Cemetery, Jefferson Hills. A Celebration of Tim's Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227. Memorial donations can be made to the Mountain Watershed Association 1414 Indian Creek Valley Road, Melcroft, PA 15462 in honor of his eternal love for the Laurel Highlands.

So very saddened and surprised to learn of Tim's passing. We were in McKeesport High School's Class of 1963. Tim was always so handsome and personable. In fact, I had a crush on him but he was taken at the time! I am so glad that I got to spend some time with him at the 50th class reunion. My condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Tim.

Tim was not only a wonderful teacher, but a wonderful person as well. Sometimes at the Part ll ,[our local bar and restaurant] he would laugh so hard, tears would come to his eyes. He loved life and his beautiful wife, Diane Beynon Landers. His battle with cancer was so sad, but he fought it with Diane's help and care. His body just got worn out from this awful disease. My heart goes out to Diane and Tim's children, Matt and Jenn. I will miss "Sappy" [a private joke],

PHS 1971-1974. Mr. Landers was a staple of the halls, never a harsh word, a gentle guidance to where you were suppose to be. Was so happy to reconnect on FB and see the love he has for his family and Florida. May his family know how very much I respected him always. I pray for the peace of God to cover his family with love and grace. Rest in everlasting peace.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away. Last week I was cleaning out a cabinet and found my HS diploma. Behind it was a recommendation letter signed by Tim Landers. As I finished reading it, I smiled remembering his wonderful example of a GENTLEMAN and fond memories of INSTRUCTION as we prepared to face our futures. It was an honor and privilege to have known this breath-taking man. Anita Washington, President Sr. Class 1973.

RIP Mr. Landers. He was my cross country coach. I was a very slow runner, but he was always so good-natured and encouraging; he would tell me, "Your speed doesn't matter -- when you cross the finish line, you're helping the team." He taught perseverance and team work. He was also just really sweet and kind. Peabody '87

I spent my junior and senior years at Peabody working as a student aide for Mr. Landers. All these years later I lean on those lessons learned. I was grateful to have reconnected with him the last few years. My sadness is eased by wonderful memories!
