Obituary For Virginia Mae (Lipscomb) Walton

A beautiful farm girl from Ashland, Virginia (born to Virginia Ellen Melton and Daniel Edward Lipscomb) met the man of her dreams (the late William McLean Walton who fondly referred to her as Maisy) at a USO dance. He scooped her up (literally) as she was walking through the door and from that day forward the rest was history. With the north connecting with the south, this belle was brought to Pittsburgh. Mae would then spend most of her life (71years) building a family and a life with many wonderful friends. She had an early career at Bell Telephone but spent most of her days as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. During time not spent with her family, she enjoyed participating in various groups and activities including bridge, book club, several bowling and golf leagues. She achieved every golfer’s dream and had a hole in one! The many friendships she created through these activities were so very precious to her. In addition to the life and relationships she built in Pittsburgh, Deep Creek Lake, Maryland played a huge role in her life. She was blessed to share with her children, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren a wonderful community she and Billy Mac envisioned and worked endlessly to establish. She has watched all of them fall in love and treasure so deeply a beautiful place where her family will continue to gather, relax and enjoy for many years to come. At the lake there were many happy hours (cheers!), picnics and card games with good friends creating fun times and happy memories for her. In her free time, she loved to sew, knit, and crochet, sharing many invaluable works with her friends and family that will be treasured for years and generations to come, as well as making items for various charities. She was always strong in her faith and full of southern grace to the very end. In her 96 years of life she was a loving mother, Mimi and great-Mimi and is survived by all:three children Cheryl (James) Daley, Sharon (Ed) Huckestein and William (Holly) Walton; five grandchildren who adored her - Grant Huckestein, Matti (Eric) Moler, Bailey (Brandon) Umenhofer, Maclean (Sydney) Walton and Brian Daley; and five great granddaughters with whom she was blessed (who we refer to as The Spice Girls) Kinsley, Adalyn, Wren, Peyton and Alyssa. She was a wonderful sister and is survived by Paul Lipscomb (Candace) and preceded in death by John Lipscomb, Edith Glazebrook and Mary Ellen Hayden. Friends will be received at John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, from 2-4 and 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 4048 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227. Everyone please meet at church. Parking for the church is available across the street in the Brentwood Shopping Center, on Brownsville Road, or limited handicap parking behind the church. (The handicap parking may be accessed by turning on West Brentridge Drive then turning onto Lawnview Drive.) In lieu of flowers, donations could be considered for St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 4048 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227.

May was like the sister I never had-- for 68 years through our friendship we enjoyed, along with our husbands Bill and Ron, many road trips in our RV, Steeler games (with a trip to the Super Bowl) bowling weekends away and fun times at Deep Creek Lake. You will always be in my heart. Love you, Marilyn

My deepest sympathy to you all. The world lost a beautiful soul with Mae's passing. I bowled and golf with Mae for any years, and I have so many fond memories of her. I was glad to see her shortly before she passed to share those memories with her. Prayers with all of you.

A true lady ! A wonderful person. A devoted wife and mother and the VERY best of friends. We had the privilege of being embraced by May, Billy Mac and her beautiful family. In fact, we all agree that the relationships we have today with the "Walton clan" are as close as family. As children going to the Lake for weekends with our parents we grew up alongside the Walton children and enjoyed many of life's milestones together. May set the stage for all of us. She fed us, hugged us and loved us generously. She allowed us to be children while letting us know what was acceptable. She even smiled when she needed to tell us what was not going to be tolerated. As young adults, she warmly welcomed us when we crashed the party. As adults she kept watch on us and celebrated our own children's accomplishments. An outpouring of love is what May gave so naturally and so freely. Dedicated friendship is what you get from the Walton clan. May, You've worked tirelessly and you have successfully conveyed the best of character traits to your children and all who knew you. Rest in the warm arms of Billy Mac and be at peace knowing your family and friends will miss you terribly. You made a lasting impression on us and you leave only a legacy of love, kindness, and integrity. The Evans Family
