Aida Baumanis, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and chocolate-lover, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2026 at the age of 99 in South Park, Pennsylvania. She was surrounded by love and prayers from around the world in her final moments and will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Aida was born in Puerto Rico and spent time in her late teenage years in New York and Maine. Back in Puerto Rico she met the love of her life, George, got married in Venezuela and lived there for many years before returning to Puerto Rico, eventually settling down in Houston, Texas. With Houston as a home base, she traveled to visit and support her children and grandchildren in various regions of the United States and across the world, always ready to pack her suitcase for an adventure.

Throughout her life, Aida had a beautiful gift for loving others and showing kindness in the ways they needed most. Her faith in God was strong and unwavering, and her love for the Lord shone brightly through the way she lived and cared for those around her. She often credited her joyful spirit and love of life to her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Aida lovingly shared that joy with everyone she met and treasured many prayerful moments with her brothers and sisters in the Living Stream congregation.

She was also competitive when it came to family board games and would “play for blood” and “sweep the floor” with her family during extended marathons of Monopoly, backgammon, and Candyland. She taught her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who called her “Ita,” that sometimes you lose and that’s okay, because you play again. The exception to that rule was with chocolate, in which case you were lucky if she even considered sharing any with you.

Ita made ordinary things feel like big things, was proud of being loud and having strong opinions, and used her limited cooking skills to show her love through chocolate fudge, pancakes with her special syrup, and blackened toast. She cruised on her bike alongside her grandchildren, could navigate the complicated roads of Houston by memory even though she never learned how to drive, and was a self-proclaimed honorary member of Princeton University and the University of Michigan. Ita always had the right thing to say or sing and always appeared when you needed her support.

Ita is survived by her children, George (Sherry), and Rosa (Terry); her grandchildren, Alexandra (Nicholas), Michael (Eilis), Brian (Courtney), William (Meaghan), Blake (Kristen), Carolina (Martin), Catherine, John, Jacqueline, and Ian; her great-grandchildren, Emilie, Stephen, Savannah, Harrison, Pierce, Leon, Demi, and Catalina; her sister, Angeles; sisters-in-law Marija (Owen) and Beatriz and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, her ‘pocotón de azúcar’ (lump of sugar), George; her son, John; her parents, Olimpio and Rosa; and her siblings, Hector Fernando, Carmen Gloria, Eliza and Norma.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers who cared for Aida and supported the family with love, compassion, and kindness.

Aida “Ita” Baumanis will be remembered as our beloved matriarch and her love will continue through her family.
